Default blowups

A friend of mine was Talking Porsche Boxster S all up because of the latest Road and Track article. So I peruse several Boxster message boards and see an alarming number of messages regarding engines and transmissions blowing up/dying etc at extremely low mileages like 29k... Unless I am not looking hard enough I really havent seen any posted around here. Anybody even know of someone thats had a non-kamikaze* related failure???

kamikaze*=driven like a rental car thats fully insured....

You are not looking hard enough. F20Cs fail all the time, especially with the early models. Search for "short block replacement".

Interesting. The contrast being "honda took care of me" and "porsche f**ked me!"....
It also appears after 2003, things got more reliable, or is it that the sales curve is in decline?

From what I've read, the #4 cylinder failure rate went down because Honda improved the lubrication. The short block failure rate I'm not so sure about - maybe people are more likely to find s2ki now and are more likely to avoid overrevving when downshifting? Maybe the lower redline has helped too.

Oh, and keep reminding your friend, "C06", "C06".

Please be mindful that the majority of engine failures are abuse or insufficient oil levels.

The next time you are at a meet, check everyone's oil level. You might be surprised to find how many folks are running low.

Actually its C6, C6. Am I a snob or something? On paper the C6 is the sports car bargain of the century, but when I look at it I see trashy exotic dancer or middle aged has-been with a drinking problem.... Jeez if this is the last year for the s2k and NSX, I pray they come out with some sort of drop top thats high powered next...

That's the reason to emphasize it to your Porschefile friend, because he'll feel the same way. Magazine articles have some good information, but the rankings just reflect how one set of people feel.

I had a buddy that was looking at used Boxsters in ATL a couple of years ago- he looked at 10 or 12 and almost half of them were on their second engine, and none had more than 50k miles. He ended up leasing a TT convertible.

in mid 2002, honda updated the piston oil jet bolts from ones with 2 holes to 4 holes. Many 00-01 owners have replaced these and I plan to as well.
