congrats on your new buy! i'm also curious as to what you paid for your car. I just got my 03 with 8200 miles on it for 24k. I think that was a good buy. The car was brand new-like, always garaged...perfect condition!

I paid 25 K for it. I didn't consider that the price, but rather the difference (4K) between the lease buyout and this purchase. $4K vs. 37K miles. Not a tough choice if you ask me.

i paid 24.5 for it.
it might be a touch high, but they weren't moving anymore. it is however a certified vehicle, so that ups the price a little.

what sealed it for me was them giving me way too much for my trade in. their used car appraiser was gone for the day, and they had been pressuring me with some line about a guy from vegas wanting to buy the car, so i need to buy it now. then they tell me i'll have to drive back another day (2 1/2 hours away) to get my car appraised and seal the deal. i tell them that i don't want to let this one get away to some guy in vegas and that i really don't feel like driving back down because it fits their schedule better, so the dealership manager appraised it and gave me about 1000 less than i would have asked private party (remember tax savings here on trades!)

anyway - the car is treating me well besides the bad fifth gear synchros, getting stuck out of sixth, and the long throws. i'm used to a solo short shifter in my civic and have missed third a couple times because it is so far away for me. any recommendations for a short shifter?

pretty sure!

i like a solid engagement in my shifting. i had bushings and a shifter in my other car and it would click into each gear with a movement of about 2 inches. i could shift that thing without using the clutch it was so solid.

with the s, i always feel like i have to baby it, or i'm going to break it. i don't know how this is going to work out at the track unless i do something about it, because that's the last thing i want to be worrying about out there.

i'm not sure a short shifter is a good idea. if you throw too fast, you could damage syncros further. also, there is a higher risk of mis-shifting.

i would become familiar with the car first. Also, I'll just say it: don't drive this like a FWD car. respect it or it will bite you.

You did get a good deal. I also purchased a new S yesterday. Well, not new, a 2003. Mine has 16000 miles and I paid 24.5 for it. My 2001 was totalled by a DUI driver last week. The new one only costed me $1500 over my insurance payout; not bad for 2 years and 40,000 miles!! Considering yours is a year older but certified, yours is a good deal, too. I'm sure 02-03 cars can be found for 22K and less, but these are usually not low-mileage immaculate examples.

what really matters is you're happy with the car. The S depreciates pretty slowly after the first 2 years. Many 2000 models are still fetching 20K if they are in great shape. 18K is more "normal" but that is still excellent resale. I generally buy used because you're likely not going to be "upside down" after the first 6 months. Compare that to 2-3.5 years when buying new on a 60 month loan.

Well I would sudgest a countersunk voodoo shift knob from www.ricks2k.com ...I got my satin aluminum shift knob in about two weeks ago...and man did it make a difference..the throws are much shorter..and you can have your arm resting on the center consol with the shifter in your hand..it feels great!..Instead of your arm being lifted, or your wrist at an painful bend to accomplish the same thing with the oem shifter...It shortens the throw about an inch, and make the entire gear box seem much "tighter" then stock, so to say....

They can be had for fairly cheap...My shifter shipped was less then $45.00 which is ALOT less then you would pay for a short shifter..and will give you the same result

The only short shifter I have heard about for the S' is the imported "C's short shifter" I've heard that they are terrible and a bitch to make fit (they are made for the jdm s2000's and require slight modifications to fit USDM models)...I talked to a guy who purchased one ($275 ) installed it and sold it later on that day because he said the feel of it was just terrible..

Voodoo
Hope this helps you out a bit
