I suspect my engine has consumed a bit of oil in the 2 weeks, 1050 miles I've had it. Ill check when its had a chance to cool down in a few minutes. I suspect this because of the lack of vtec on the drive to work this morning. Anyway, anyone have any recommendation as to what oil (if it matters) to top it off with?

Thanks.

I would recommend a nonsynthetic 10w-30. Mobil "clean engine" oil comes to mind.

The parts manager at my local honda dealership says that their "honda" oil does indeed come from a mobil 1 distributor. so i'm assuming its mobil 1 also.

Wanabe, I wouldn't be surprised if you are down over 1/2 qt oil.

Since none of the gear heads have posted regarding oil levels yet, I'll start the VTEC portion of this thread in my less-than-able way. I'm no mechanic (as you'll plainly see from my following comments), but from what little I know about our unique little cam, it has a second lobe which it slips into at (around) 6500 rpm. It moves there when directed to do so by OIL PRESSURE, if what I've been told is correct. This change in cam position changes the timing, hence the "VTEC", which is an acronym for "Variable Timing something something". ("Electronically Controlled", maybe? "Elegantly Constructed?" Help me here, folks.) ANY decrease (or, I suppose, increase) in the total volume of oil in the crankcase will affect VTEC "activation", leaving Mr. Cam and his little valve friends operating from where they were when the engine started. I have no idea what our cam looks like, and I'm sure someone here (damn-near anyone, probably!) can explain it better than I. Regardless of my low-tech explanation, I'd posit that oil level is critical for VTEC performance. Check that oil OFTEN. If you need help finding our uniquely-situated dipstick, you're in trouble already.
