That sucks to hear. I've lived in SF all my life and can never imagine leaving my S parked outside for the night. Too many haters out there.
Well, he left his sunglasses on the seat. You should never leave anything in sight for thieves, because this is what happens.

I realized I left my wallet on my seat once after walking ten blocks - I ran ten back.

^^LOL. You might want to invest in an alarm from the sound of it because of your location. As everyone has mentioned, your lucky your top wasn't slashed. It almost makes it seem like someone you know and they just wanted to cut the cost of what you had to spend after they broke into it.

Auto break-ins in SF is disproportionately highly than many other cities. Might have something to do with number of junkies in this city.

My wife's car got broken into last summer even though there was nothing in plain view. And we live on a quiet residential street in Twin Peaks.

in the past year within 2 blocks of where i live i have had 4 friend with their cars broken into. this is filmore and bush.

van ness and turk is the border of the projects. its like hayes/western edtion bordering hte tenderloin, right? (damn you must have bums coming at you from all directions, at least for me i just have to worry about bums coming from the south) either way, never leave anything in sight. my buddy got his g35 window smashed in for a fricking ipod cable!!! i am pretty sure i know who keeps breaking into the cars around me. its this black bum with nasty greyish dreads that rides around on his bike. he looks for items in cars and calls his buddy to break in when they find something. its obvious he has no business in our neighborhood. i wish he would just stay south of geary in the ghetto. i really want to jump him cuz i see him all the time, but dont want to go to jail for beating down a bum.

but yea, never park your car near the projects. if you must, take everything out of site.

never park a nice import car near the richmond, ricers wont just break in, they will steal and strip your car.

I had ALL the windows broken on my S last year... I wish I would have insisted on OEM glass. I'm sure no one would really notice that its not OEM glass, but I notice. There are differences, the edge of the glass is a little different and the curvature seems different too. The windshield looks like it distorts things, not too crazy but I can notice. And if you are like me and most S2000 owners, the little details matter.

My advice, go for OEM even if you have to pay more and avoid regretting it later.

Turk can be bad...it crosses through many areas from Tenderloin to Civic Center, into the western addition. Turk off Van Ness isn't that bad, but let's face it...being surrounded by Tenderloin and the Western Addition doesn't help.

Either way, the car is now parked in a secured garage, and I will never leave my shit in plain sight again. I usually removed everything....this just shows you get lazy once and it catches up to you

Yeah Turk and Van Ness is near the Civic Center. Close to Western Addition and the 'loin. Not exactly a "bad" neighborhood, but a lot of bums and druggies around.

Some politician got his car broken into last year as it was parked outside the City Hall, that got on the news quick. Meanwhile I'm sure scores of cars get broken into every day in that area.

When my wife's car got broken into last year, the same thief tried to force the lock to the building that we live in. The building manager heard him, and she freaked out. We called the cops later, but they refused to even come. We had his greasy fingerprints all over my wifes's car windows and we told the cops as much, but they didn't care. They said something to the effect of "Hey, that's how it is in SF. Too bad."
