Default Buy Privately or from a dealer...

I can get a real good deal on a S2000 from a private owner.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing a car from a dealer and from a private owner.

Thanks

It depends on what state you live in, but in Georgia you do not pay sales tax on a car that you purchase from a private individual. If you buy from a dealership, you have to pay sales tax even if the car is new. That can be a chunk of dough.

In a private deal you can get a good idea of how the car has been treated. A used car at a dealership might have 500 miles on the track and you would never know.

I bought used, and only looked private party. I figured that if I had a car that I knew had problems, the easiest way to get rid of it is to trade it in at a dealer. Plus, any car at a dealer has been wailed on during test drives etc.
