Default Buying a car out of state

So, I might be a new and proud owner of a s2k Not a brand new one but hey, it's new to me! Anyway... if all goes well and I can sell my crap... Im thinking of buying a car but it's out of state. Far....

So how would one go about buying a car that's like 2000 miles away? I mean, it's a nice car and I trust the owner but you know, you can never be too safe. I dont want to give like $xx,xxx in cash and then find that the title's missing, the car is really stolen or what not. I would fly there and drive it back... but that would take a lot of time and the price of gas for 2000 miles +flight ticket will equal the shipping price of the car.

Now, if i get the car shipped... what do I do with the title and the money? Does the shipping company hold the title or do something?

How many of you have ordered your cars on ebay or had it shipped from a forum member?

Also, i need to know good shipping companies, cause i have never heard of one yet.. All i know is that it's gonna cost probably $600 or so to get the car here. If this doesn't work out, i can always take a 7 hour drive to San Fran and get a car there. Hopefully a reply will come soon since.... im looking to buy the car really soon. Thanks everyone!

I used to lurk and now im back.

Welcome back. It might be a good idea to run a carfax report on the car. I would also post in the forum where the car is and see if anyone knows this person and to see if you can find some details about the car and the person.

If they aren't a member of the forums then I'm sure a couple of people out there would be more than happy to take a look at the car for you and let you know if it's worth it.

Yeah he's a member on this board and i know he's met a couple people so that's no worry. Im just trying to decide if it's a good idea to go to michigan and drive it back.. im not sure if i can make it on time Haha

Does anyone know how long it would take driving back about 2000 miles? From michigan to ca. I can get there probably friday morning and have until sunday night.

I drove from San Diego to Philadelphia in 3 days. That was with another person driving all night and day. We took turns sleeping etc. By myself I did it in about 4 1/2 days so from MI it would probably take 3. You would most likely have to drive a minimum of 12 hours a day to make it in 3. Thats not easy to do. Stretch your legs once in a while and have plenty of caffine handy.

do not buy if you can't see it in person and finalize the deal in person...please i learned the hard way...its not worth the risk..do you really want to trust a stranger with $20K?

Yeah, even though it's a member of the board, try to get someone else to go check it out. Sadly, even members of S2ki can be crooks sometimes. Double check the bad sellers thread for his screen name https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=240191

Also, ask in his local forum for references or people that have seen the car firsthand.

Not saying that it's a bad deal, but just make sure your bases are covered when doing a transaction that is so far away.

Thanks man.. i know.. if i lose my money, not only will i be pissed but i'll be in a world of hell cause of tuition and what not.

But anyway, it's no secret so i'll give you the link to the car I'm buying.

that's him. I think he's met a couple guys on here. But okay, since it's nothing that has to be kept secret and im in the middle of dealing with him, I think we found a way to safely wire the money and the title. But.. would anyone here be generous enough to go check the car out for me? And it's no offense to those that are really nice and sincerely trying to help me, but I would hope that you're a member for at least 3 weeks... cause that'll assure the WORST possible scenario, cause anyone can make another screenname on this board. Thanks so much.. it would be greatly appreciated.

And if anyone's already seen this car, holler! EDIT: please, unless he's a scammer which i highly doubt... if you have a negative comment, just PM me instead of killing the guy's sale and posting it. thanks, just out of courtesy to him.
