Default Buying an S2000 soon

So I recently started browsing for S2000's around my area. I was wondering if anyone can tell me any problems that I should be aware of it look for when going to test drive one or see one.

I currently drive a 2009 civic Si sedan. I just bought a new daily driver. It's a 2003 mazda protege with only 27,xxx miles so I would like to trade in the Si for something a bit more fun and sporty.

Any tips? How are the trannys? Do they like to grind third like previous honda 6 speed trannys?

Forgot to mention I have an intake and flashpro tune on my si that made a pretty decent difference.

How do these two cars compete with each other? And does the s2000 support flashpro?

I was looking at a 2002 ap1

2006-2009 are the only models that support flashpro. k20 is way more responsive to modifications(bolt ons) than the f20 since the f20 is pretty maxed out from the factory.

I went from a 8thgen si with flashpro and bolts ons as well. There's a huge difference in the transmission. I would deffinatly look for the stickies here on the forums for known problems and check them out before you buy. Also nice choice on ap1 it truly is a drivers car

Your Si and a stock S2000 should be very similar for speed.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. I read over all the stickies and got a lot of VERY useful information. Thanks!

I got a couple questions though if no one minds!

1. I think I am choosing to go with an AP1, I think I would prefer the higher revving engine and everyone seems to say its more "raw".

2. I read the newer s2000 can use flashpro for tuning purposes, my question if I get the AP1 how would I go about tuning it when and if I get a I/H/E setup?

3. How common are the cracked retainers for the AP1? I don't want to worry if I get the car, or have to pay someone immediately after purchasing to swap out the AP1 for AP2 retainers, and also the the revised banjo bolts for the oil (although I am thinking about going for a 2003).

4. If I cannot afford the 2003 (I doubt I can get financed for what I want at 60 months or 72, I might just have to go for a newer one like an 08 and fiance for 72 months).

cracked retainers will occur if the car was misshifted really bad. If the car wasn't beat to hell you should be good even though upgrading for the future will be good.

There arent too many issues you need to worry about as the car is pretty maintenance free. Just try to find a well taken care of s2000 with a healthy engine. Get a ppi and a compression test to make sure everything checks out.

The tranny is one of the best. Extremely precise and smooth and there arent really issues to deal with like grinding third like some other gear boxes.

Tuning on ap1 is very limited compared to the MY06+ tuning. Youll have to use AEM, Haltec, Kpro, or greddy emanage for the ap1 and you wont have the same capabilities as flashpro for 06+
