Bye-Bye S2000
Yeah, I test drove a manual and it was way too soft. That is why I opted for the DSG. That and I drive in traffic a decent amount and figured the DSG would be nicer.
It isn't exactly a manual, but it offers most of the benefits and being a bit of a tech junkie I like it in that regard too.

Have fun with it. I came from a VW R32 to my S2k. If i could have found a R32 for what I paid for my S2k, i would switch back without fail. I had intake, exhaust, and GIAC, and i put down 242whp and 242wtq. The 2.0T you will like. I do think DSG was a mistake. I don't really care how well it shifts, it's not a true manual IMO and takes away from the driving experience, but if i HAD to have an automatic, i would have a DSG car over anything else. Post up some pics, lots of old school VW guys here im sure! :-P

I got the DSG is it shifts very quickly (insert obligatory "faster than any human" comment here). I have not heard of any major reliability issues on the GTI, but we shall see.
I am not sure where you get the "lack of power" comment. It has 207 ft-lbs of torque around 2k rpm and with a chip (getting that saturday) it takes it to a touch over 300 ft-lbs.
It isn't as fast as an S2000 in an absolute sense, but I'd say it's just as fast in a practical sense. Meaning for commuting and tooling around town it gets off the line faster and that is most of the driving I do.

well i did extensive research; the europeans have had the GTi 2 yrs before us and people on the forum notice that DSG system over time began making a noise and that there were delays in shifting when shifting to next gear. The trend also was apparent to owners in the US; hopefully they fix that issue because DSG tranny is very expensive and VW make any excuse not to fix like if you have had mods added to ur car. Also in regards to the chip, they found even when chipped in comparison to stock ms3; the stock ms3 is the better performer. heres a link http://<a href="http://www.mazda3for...ic=96564.0</a> Also heard the internals in the 2.0t isnt as good the 1.8t. And getting power with dsg tranny is hard.
I also like the interior of the GTI a lot more than the MS3. The GTI definitely feels more "upscale" than the MS3 and that goes a long way with me.
I read some reviews on both and it seemed like the MS3 only have small objective advantages, but subjectively the GTI won out (interior, driving experience, etc).
Finally, I got a lot better deal on the GTI as we'd bought from the VW dealer before.
Too each their own I guess.
I will post up some pics once I get home before it's dark out.

definitely a downgrade, but good luck with your new car!!

Sure seems like an upgrade when I go to the grocery store or Target
Did you consider getting a winter beater instead?
I don't live where it snows, but I find it strange that people would want to drive their S in the snow. If I lived where it snowed, I'd probably feel differently. Maybe those dealers up north that can't sell s2ks in the snow should advertise the CR as the doubling as a snowplow.
