I'm looking at the latest Import Tuner and see a bunch of aftermarket intake manifold. I'm just curious to see if anyone's studied our intake manifold to see if any improvements can be made (?)

don't you sleep Rich?

The intake, I haven't looked at it yet. I've heard a few stories of Extrud Honed processes on this manifold with negligable results. Of course, in a SC'ed situation, I'm sure the improvements yield much greater results, but for NA setup, its minimal.

Porting, polishing, not sure. I'd have to sit with a flow bench and a few carbide bits to make it as optimal as it can be. A different kind of intake, perhaps a box-style intake, not sure on this particular engine and the R&D costs on something like that would need to bring in sizeable revenue for me to invest in it. The only problem I would have with a different style of intake would be the space under the hood.

/my two cents.

Any new news on improving the intake manifold?

I emailed TWM induction but they have no plans for a individual t-body kit, If they would make a manifold I think that would make some serious NA horses..... .... but it would also be hard to tune

UL had a post a while back about plenum volumes and lengths along with the head work. You might find it if you do a search.

The research team ;-) is working on two avenues. First, our head porter will be attempting to tweak the manifold. It's already been flowed and deemed to be the best manifold on a production Honda to date (surprise - just like the head). Second, Tom at C&T Engineering has taken a mold of the interior of the manifold and will be running some computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to see where performance might be gained.

Don't knwo what we'll find, but there are probably a few hp lurking in the stock manifold. Aftermarket would be best, but castings get expensive.

Wouldn't you imagine that this area has been optimized by the Honda engineers in much the same way as the rest of the engine?

I recently bought a separate manifold and had a mechanic put in on a flow bench for some tuning. Although UL is right where this manifold is the best made by Honda so far, their is still improvements to be made. My mechanic actually got really good numbers by tuning it. I am waiting for time to send my TB to Proflow so I can put on everything at the same time. I am still considering the coolant bypass mod done by marcucci, but haven't decided yet.

I will get the numbers on each runner from before and after and post them later....

Pappy, just make sure that you flow it with the cylinder head as well. That's the only way to get an accurate picture of what's happening. With a stock cylinder head the stock intake manifold only reduces flow by about 3-4%, so that's the theoretical maximum gain in flow to be had from intake manifold mods.
