I have owned and tracked the ap2, currently own a ap1. Along with everyone else can say it is noticeable, we arent talking torque monsters here though so it isnt that big of a deal. I do have to put my .02 in and say my personal opinion favors the ap1.

I once thought about going with the 2.2 liter, but then i realized you can also get more torque and stay reliable with honda parts by going with the k24 crank oem stroker build.

I've driven both.

Yes, the AP2 has more torque/power and the difference registers one notch above noticeable.

In the real world, though, you are trading a longer powerband for more torque and slightly higher peak. 0-60 and 0-1320 they are within a margin of error. One can play the "but if it is 0-50" game all they want...one can dream up a test that favors either.

I'd say any perceived difference with the F22 is just as much gearing as it is displacement.

Now, a 2.2L with a higher redline would be way better, but if offered the choice between an otherwise stock F20C and F22C, I would go with the former.

My AP1 made 214 whp on a dyno dynamics after a VAFC tune. F20s have plenty of tuning potential as well. If I was shopping for a newer S it probably would be an 06+, especially if it's a daily. If you can get a good deal on a clean AP1 go for it.

S2000s are slow, its best just to get a Ap2, so you can cruise in the citys without blogging. thats about the only differences I can see. And yes, Ive own both, an on my 2nd s2k, and be prepare to lose to every car on the road.

when Ive repeatedly driven both back to back on autox and or street, the AP2 always feels like it is pulling significantly harder from down low, they feel near identical up top, and with equal rubber and suspension seem to run near identical times unless the course just happens to favor ones gearing over the others. On thing that really emphasizes the difference in feel though is that since I have put i/h/hfc/e on my AP1, my sub 3000 still feels weaker than a stock AP2, my 3000-6000 feels the same as a stock AP2 and my 6000+ feels a bit more powerful than a stock AP2. The only AP2 I have driven with bolt-ons (no tune, just like my AP1) felt the same up top as mine but better everywhere below Vtec yet again still ran pretty much Identical autox times.

Conclusion: I feel that the difference in feel is MUCH bigger than the actual difference in any kind of measurable performance shy of high gear/low RPM acceleration.

...

One must be careful in using 0 - 60 as an 'absolute' measure of accelerative performance. I know that recent model Civic Si's have 0 - 60 times in the mid to high 6's, and a good part of the reason is that they have a short second gear, which redlines below 60 mph, thus requiring an additional shift (and a lost few tenths of a second to reach 60). Another measure one sometimes sees is 0 - 100 km/hr, which is equivalent to 0 - 62 mph, and once again the exact choice of gearing for second gear can affect that value.

is there a difference? YES

is the difference significant? NO

If you spend most of your time below VTEC, the AP2 is more fun. If you spend most of your time in VTEC (at a track) the AP1 is more fun.

Also the 9K rpm F20C is a lot more fun with an AP2 transmission!

First of all to answer your question.. Yes you can feel the difference in acceleration. Ap2 does have a stronger kick to it because of the +9 torque bump.
I have driven both cars and I favored the ap2 over the ap1 during touge/canyon runs, where the earlier powerband is noticeably more advantageous.

If its a course like autox where in both ap1 and ap2 the highest gear you use is 2nd gear the ap2 would most likely come out on top because it puts out power faster and stronger, but if its a course where ap2 needs to shift up to 3rd while ap1 can still stay in 2nd means the ap1 has the advantage because it doesnt have to lose power while shifting up an extra gear. This is obviously due to the 8k redline vs 9k on a ap1.

These are obvious facts that some people dont have a clue in.
This is stock for stock not including any mods of course..
