Default Can you rev too hard in neutral?

I noticed when I reved my engine a little too hard while in neutral that there is a certain smell that leaks into the cabin. Why does it do that? I am guessing it is probally a bad thing and I am never going to do it again , but can anyone explain what is happening to create that smell?

Try to avoid revving in neutral alltogether.

It's like shooting a bow with no arrows.

I wouldn't go over like 3500 or 4000 rpm if it's not under load.

NOT good to rev an engine to its upper rev range with no load. That smell you observed is probably a normal smell. It's just that when you are moving, the air blows it away.
