Can you rev too hard in neutral?

It's bad revving in neutral?
The thought is that when you rev the engine under load, combustion pressure counterbalances some of the inertial forces on the piston, wrist pin and connecting rod at the top of the stroke. Revving in neutral doesn't generate much combustion pressure, resulting in greater forces on those parts. I agree with this view.

However, the situation must be the same or worse when feathering the throttle at high rpm, on the track or elsewhere. We don't worry overly much about that.

Nonetheless, for the reason given, I wouldn't rev without load unnecessarily.
