Canon XL1 + ZTEC camera mount = recipe for disaster?
A while back friend of mine has loaned me his Canon XL1 camera as collateral for a little loan I gave him. In the interim time, I bought my S2k.
So I'm looking at the camera mount on Ricks2k and thinking to myself, "Can that handle a 6.5 lb camera?" (See here for specs: http://www.canondv.com/xl1s/s.html )
Mind you, I will be doing some spirited driving down very curvy backroads. I keep having images flash in my head of a very expensive (and amazing camera) tumbing off the back of my S and smashing to bits, not to mention any damage that'd occur to my car in the process
If the camera mount on Rick's website is too flimsy for this camera-- and I really think the secret compartment's plastic is too weak to handle this much weight being thrown around-- does anybody else know of a good mount that I can attach in my car? It doesn't need to be in the same place as the Ricks' mount (altho that location is ideal). I just need to be able to look at the mount and any securing devices and say, "Yup, that camera ain't goin anywhere."
Do you guys who race your S ever use a camera that's this heavy, and if so, how do you secure it?
The camera does have a standard quick-release for tripods.
Your input is most appreciated!

I use a mount of my own design that screws down where the wind deflector goes. The mount itself weighs at least 6 pounds, plus the weight of the camera, and I have never had a problem. My videos are rock steady and I have never had it come loose during spirited driving. PM me if you want more info or you want to see any any of the videos.
I created the Bracket in question and it was not designed for a camera of these Dimensions:
8 3/4 x 8 7/16 x 16 5/16 in.
(223mm x 214mm x 415mm) By today's standards that is a very large camera
The bracket comes with a head that can handle the weight but I believe with a camera of that size the only thing that might give out would be the 1/4-20 mount on the camera itself, I have not had one issue with the bracket failing or a compartment lid being removed from force - I am sure many users would stand behind me on this one, To date I have not had one complaint or issued one refund.
I understand your concern but have you ever held a bracket in your hand? It is a very solid piece of equipment and I am confident that the bracket itself can handle your camera but again, I believe it is not a good idea to use that camera because of the mass the camera has. You will have to forgive me but I feel a need to defend this bracket, It is by far the best bracket available for our cars and after reading the title to your thread I thought you had a failure and to this date I have not had one issue with it!
I will be more than happy to answer any questions.
