Car & Driver '04 test results
I looked and haven't seen all the results posted. Maybe I missed it. Anyway, here are the times from the C&D November Short Take on the '04 S2000 vs their August test of the '03.
Test times:
'03(August) / '04 (November)
0-60: 5.4 / 5.4
quarter: 14.1 / 14.1
street start, 5-60: 7.0 / 6.9
Top speed: 146 / 149
braking: 161 / 166
30-50 (top gear): 9.9 / 8.8
50-70 (top gear): 9.4 / 7.9
Basically, all are well within uncertainties and sample-sample variation, except top-gear accel. I'm not surprised by any except the "street start". I would have expected, and my models predict, a significant improvement. Maybe they added that one extra 2-3 shift rather than going to fuel cutoff? From the top speeds, it is clear that it isn't a case of the '04 being an underperformer. I do fully expect that you'll see significantly an improvement in a given (low) rpm real-world acceleration. But that doesn't show in all-out clutch-drop assaults.

I wouldn't say 5 feet difference in braking is a difference. I defy anyone to get within 5 feet of their original braking distances over a number of stops - and I'm NOT talking back to back either.

Don't forget these are just numbers.
What the numbers don't show is HOW they got there.
I bet the '04 is much easier to drive and easier to repeat those figures. The earlier ones are a little trickier and require more precision, so if you miss a shift or something like that -- you will be much slower.
