Car & Driver Lightning Lap - S2000 CR
#11
I'm not making excuses and have no illusions that the CR should have done better than XXX car. On that day and on that track those are the #s, it is what it is. Doesn't take away from the cars, lap times are not everything. Hell even the Eilse didn't do so well , slower than the NA one they had before. Interesting to see the GTR only about a tenth off from the Scuderia though.

First off, the CR was lumped in the 30-60k price range. This is not fair since you can pick up one for $29.500. It should have been downgraded to the LL1 where it will place 2nd behind the cobalt.

This 4.2 mile track was definitely a good one for the high HP cars. They said the s2k had the 4th lowest HP of every contender, and I'm sure it had the lowest tq. But also, something must be said for the Cobalts numbers, what the hell did GM do to that thing?? This isn't the first track test I've seen of the new SS where it blew away it's competition, and then some.

GM aped the Evo when they saw how well it was selling...it will be interesting to see how the reliability holds up (the Sky RL isn't so good)
the S isn't designed to compete with turbo cars, why would it? I have a turbo FD RX-7 that would rape that silly Cobalt every which way but loose, so I really could care less
too bad the Cobalt isn't a better looking package or they might actually sell some

I must say ... the S2000 really needs more horsepower. Although the article claimed the car could do corners @ full throttle ... those cornering speeds were really not that great. Also the max speeds in each of the sections were quite low ...

Well, at least the S2000 CR was faster than the Civic Mugen Si.
AND faster than the Elise SC. Wow.
Except for the Cobalt, the CR placed about where I'd expect it to. Too bad there's no base Boxster or 350Z to compare with.

I am SO confused here. Your telling me a Chevy Cobalt SS is kicking all those cars under its ass? This just looks so hard to believe. I never knew the Cobalt was even considered to be that great on a track!
