Carmax vs. Private
Opinions on S2000 to WRX? I did it... Sold my 06 S2000 and picked up a 2012 STi. I didn't have to get rid of the S2000, but I figured it would be nice to have a fun/sporty family car. Within 3 months of owning the STi, I sold it and got back into an S2000. Considering we have 2 children now, the S2000 doesn't get driven much. But, I learned my lesson and won't be getting rid of another S2000. This is considering we have 3 cars, but I understand if you have to sell the S2000 if it's a vehicle used every day.
I haven't switched but I have ridden during autocross and they're very different cars. Not to say that you won't like the WRX but if you're expecting something equivalent to the S (which you probably won't find with a rear seat anyway) then you'll be disappointed. If you can appreciate the WRX for what it is you might be happy with it. Polling won't tell you anything regarding whether you'll be happy with it or not. Get out there and test drive.
Best is always highly subjective on every topic out there. If you value convenience above all else Carmax will be best. If you value higher sales price above all else private party will be best. There are always pros and cons to every decision. Private party will be more of a hassle. You have to decide what suits you best.

If you are thinking the carmax route- don't
You would benefit more by trading it in at a dealership if the car you want can be located at one. They will give you more for your trade in (plus you will save a lot on the taxes for the new car) plus they may be negotiable on the price of the new vehicle as well. Carmax will lowball the crap out of you and are not negotiable on their car prices.
Ultimate profitability is to sell private and buy private.

Never owned a WRX so can't comment...but so many other cars out there besides the WRX. Do you need AWD or just prefer it?
Speaking of Carmax, that's a good place to search for an used car....I find their website easy to use. And it cAn help narrow down your search options, and does not mean you have to buy from them
Good luck
If you are going to get rid of the S2k for something bigger, then I would recommend go much bigger like a minivan (or a car-based SUV, which is essentially a minivan without the sliding doors).
Carmax is a good place to get an idea of how to price your car. Good luck and congrats!

I have both a s2000 and a WRX and I love them both. As you know they are very different cars, but for your situation (and if both are not an option) I would recommend the WRX. I definetly will not replace the s2000 but its a fun safe family friendly car.
So I had my car appraised and Carmax offered me $20,000 for it. I'm thinking I can probably get more privately but I'm not sure how long it'll take to sell or if it's worth it or not. What are people's thoughts on the CarMax offer? Here is a link to my CL ad:

Girlfriend was interested in a '13 XV Crosstrek, which uses the engine from the '12 Impreza. After seeing a number of reports of the issue on the Crosstrek, I checked the Impreza and the problem there (due to higher sales) is substantial.
