Yep, it's perfectly fine. The only thing you'll really hurt if you went from say 2nd gear directly to 4th, is the synchros. But just hold the clutch down, put the shifter in the 3rd gear gate without releasing the clutch, and then release it when you pull it down into 4th. This doesn't hurt the car at all... and actually puts less wear and tear on the clutch if you do alot of city driving.

To the OP: You may actually be surprised to see an increase in gas mileage if you shift a bit higher up, like 3.5k to 4k as long as you don't give it more throttle.

Leisurely driving I shift around 4k RPM but I've noticed that 3k is still okay and doesn't cause the RPM's to drop too much and lug the engine. I wouldn't shift below that though.

I have been shifting at about 4- 4.5K, but am now trying to teach myself to shift at 5.5K.
