I have a GTS and S2000. The GTS has a K&N (yeah, whopty do), TRD springs, TRD exhaust. The 0-60 via G-Tech, ~ 6.4 sec when launched hard (not S2K 6K rpm hard, more of a slip clutch around 4K hard). My S2K on the same roads w/the same G-Tech on the same night recorded a best of 5.4 sec 0-60. But, if I didn't rev high and side step the clutch I was anywhere from 6.1 to 6.7 (bog city). So, if I pounce on an S2000 at a stop light in my GTS, and the S2000 isn't quite ready, I could beat him to about start of 3rd in the Celica. Not so far out there after all, eh?

As many of us know, Toyota declared war on Honda (stating that they will rival and copy every car Honda puts out). The new Celica is Toyota's attempt to counter the GSR/Prelude. A few of the magazines I read when it first came out stated that the Celica was almost a blatant copy of a GSR (they almost stole Honda VTEC technology when it comes down to it) yet it didn

Oh, you mean 10 year old technology like the continuously variable valve timing on the GTS. You know like V-TEC I. Oh, wait, that's right, V-TEC I is not available yet.

Yes, Toyota had declared an all out war on Honda. In Japan especially, Honda is sneaking up fast on Toyota because most younger kids think Toyotas are for old folks (can you say japanese Lincoln?). Kinda sad considering that Toyota is the worlds 3rd or 4th largest car company and has more money reserves than any other by an insane amount. They are by far the richest car company out there.

To me, it seems Toyota has just been playing the copy game lately. Mainly with Honda and their desire to deliver a punishing blow that just won't come, but also with Mazda, Ford and VW. MR2...wannabe Miata. New RAV4...looks like something VW. Sequoia...just an Expedition copy. And the biggest is the new Celica. The Integra GSR has been out since 94 with a 170 hp VTEC engine. Toyota brings out a new Celica in 99 that most agree is only marginally better than the GSR, and that the Type R is still far better. The GT-S (which is, indeed, a total VTEC rip off, but with the added "i" part so really an i-VTEC unit) only makes 180hp from 1.8L...the same size as the Integra's engine. So, while the Celica tops the GSR for about 2 years, it is going to be leagues behind next year when the new 220hp i-VTEC powered Integra gets here. The Celica is going to appear overweight and slow again, just like the previous generation Celica.

Sad, sad, sad that one of the most renowned companies on Earth resorts to copying and then can't even better the object they're trying to copy. I just love how little Honda just says bring it on...and then lays a hook right in Toyota's face. There should be no way that Honda should be spanking Toyota, but they are. Makes me happy to see that.

As far as being behind. If you think about it, a new Toyota is maybe a 6 year old Honda...not quite 10. But still....

Any others love seeing Toyota get their butts kicked by smaller, less wealthy companies? Every time Honda or Mazda is declared winner I get so happy. I don't know why, I hate Toyota and will never buy one. Their products are good, but I guess I just see them as passionless copiers who just happen to build their product really well.

Explain to me how 2500 lbs is overweight? That's lighter than an S2000 but has back seats and a trunk.

Continuously variable timing is older then Honda VTEC. Makes the Toyota look even farther behind. Don

If I'm not mistaken a few years back the MR2 turbo would have spanked any honda. Same with the Supra of all generations. Even today it will beat Honda's finest, not counting the NSX. Even then it will be a good match up. I personally have always liked Toyota. They make a good product and put out tough competition for honda.

I'm not taking it personal, are you? I'm just pointing out that Toyota outpaces Honda in several developmental areas. Not that they invented variable valve timing of course. But all Japanese automakers are 'fast followers' to some extent. And there is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is dismissing a product as a '10 year old copy' and not examining its merits. Even worse are statements completely out side the realm of fact. I.E. the 2500 lb Celica being overweight. Under powered, perhaps. But I've yet to see this 220 hp unicorn of a new Integra materialize. But that's been beat to death in other threads.
