Default Certified Preowned - worth it?

Hey, I'm seriously looking at a 2000 NFR with ~37k miles that was bought by the current owner as a certified preowned car. From the looking that I have done, it seems that CPO cars come with a 100k mile warranty, but this guy says his is 7yr/80k miles. My question is - What is this warranty and what does it cover? I'd tend to think it is powertrain only, especially since he has had the car a year (the normal length of a CPO full car warranty).

Is it odd to see a CPO with an 80k warranty? Is it imposible? If it is just a powertrain warranty, is it worthwhile? The current owner seems to think it is all-inclusive which would be awesome. I will be checking the terms when I see the car, but I'd like to know a bit more beforehand.

Also, I know a couple TSBs haven't been attended to on this car, such as the banjo bolts and the cluch. Are these replaced at Honda's expense whenever I bring the car in?

Thanks a lot! Hopefully within a week I'll be able to fill out the "owners" section of my profile! h

Most CPO Hondas from the dealership come with a HondaCare extended warranty which is good for you! They cover pretty much the same thing the factory warranty does, but if you have ANY mods there is a good chance the HondaCare will be voided. Honda will not pay to have your banjo bolts replaced since technically there is nothing wrong with the 2-hole ones, but you should be able to have the clutch-buzz (I'm assuming thats what you're talking about) since you still have your extended warranty. TSB's arent the same thing as recalls, TSB's are only paid for by Honda while the car is under warranty or if you can get them to goodwill you after the warranty expires. How did the guy you are buying it from take care of the car? Thats the most important thing here.

My understanding of a Honda Certified Preowned is this:

1 year full warrenty coverage from date of purchase of pre-owned car.
3 year extension of the drivetrain warrenty from the original purchase date of the car (or 100k, whichever comes first).

So you may have some time left on the drivetrain warrenty but that's about it assuming that it is a Honda certified pre-owned vehicle. Hope that info is correct and helpful.

^^^^^There is some false information in that statement.

A CPO Honda does not come with HondaCare. HondaCare is a seperate service contract that can be purchased for Hondas. HondaCare can be voided for ANY mods. A CPO car has its factory warrant period extended and is not a service contract. Therefore, a CPO car is protect by the Magnuson Moss act just like a new car.

Ah, ok. I'm pretty sure it's the HondaCare warranty in that case (though it is also CPO). No mods to the car and it sounds like he took VERY good care of the car.

So, IF it is the HondaCare, I have a 7yr/80k mile all inclusive warranty providing there are no mods done to the car in that period? I'm not too worried about the TSBs being covered, I just wanted to know what to expect.

I am not sure....I actually have a certified car and also HondaCare. I told them I wanted bumper 2 bumper till 100k and this is what they said I should do.

If you are the 2nd owner and the car is not purchased used from a Honda dealer it can not be CPO. If you are the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner bought the car CPO then he can transfer it to you.

HondaCare does not equal CPO

I appologize for the false info, I was a bit rushed when typing it and should have clarified further.

I would be the 3rd owner, it was bought CPO from a dealer by #2. I guess I'll have to pester him for details on the HondaCare warranty, but it sounds like what I want!

Despite what others on this site have said about Honda Care and CPO warranty problems, it all really comes down to whether your dealer is a dick or not. I got my clutch, soft top, and rear brake assemblies replaced for free under the CPO warranty (I also have Honda Care, but it was the extended warranty under which they filed the claims).

TallyS2K can back this up.....How you doing man?

I, unlike many others, got the CPO and Honda Care thrown in for free. Its all about bargaining power and leverage. If the dealer has 5 sitting on the lot, you have a better chance of getting a better deal.

I have an INJEN CAI on my car, and no warranty has been voided yet, and am looking into a Comptech exhaust. Not to mention a full-blown stereo upgrade.
