Default Chip Modification

Is anyone familiar with Jet Performance chip upgrades? They have one available for the S2000 and you have to send in your ecu. Costs $300.

Maybe it is a scam but Honda was able to get about 10 hp more upgrading the 02 ecu and apparently have done some more tuning for 04 - leaning out the A/F a little.

Don't buy Jet. They can't alter the ECU. At least not for $300. The programming is encoded in the microprocessor memory during the semiconductor fab process. It can't be changed unless you change the microprocessor, which costs more than $300/chip in small quantities.

My feeling is that Honda has engineered the S to get as much HP as possible. They probably already have the best chip for the car. I don't think I would screw with it. It also might screw up your warranty if it's still active.

UL, thanks for the info - it's nice getting right to the top so quickly. Now that I've got your attention what kind of problems will you run into using a JDM ecu? Thanks.

No immobilizer for one. I would suggest that if you don't want to spring for a Mugen ECU (or even more $$$ for an AEM EMS), pick up a VAFC and be done with it. THe emanage is another option, but will require more tuning.

UL,

One other quick question. I assume the VAFC doesn't alter ignition timing so would it be better to have an my02 ecu rather than my00. Did we ever find out why the 02s produce a little more power?

Do most ECUs use a fairly standard chipset with masked ROMs or are they totally custom? If it's a standard chipset, swapping it out would be quite easy once the program is done. We're not talking Pentiums here...something in the area of a 16-20 Mhz, COTS processor is more than adequate, like a 68HC16, etc.
