My 01 with 22k miles on it started ticking on the rear driver side a few months ago. If I pulled the wheel off, it would go away for a few dozen miles, but would always return. It sounded exactly like you described - like a rock in the tires. It continued on the drivers side, and then showed up on the passenger side.

It was embarrasing as hell - very very loud at the worst of times. It persisted until it was continual and was more like a squeaking sound.

I did a search and found that it was most likely that the axel nuts needed to be relubed and retorqued. I brought it into a dealer about 2 weeks ago, cost me 50 bucks, but so far its solved the problem.

Check to make sure its coming from the wheel area and not the diff, but when you bring it in, Id suggest that similar problems have been somewhat common in older cars and theyve been the axel nuts.
Mine did the same thing, an '02 w/22k miles. I just had the axle nuts replaced and retorqued to a new higher value. 220 instead of 180 I think. Anyway, I just did a testdriv with the tech, and he took care of it. n/c under warranty. Car feels much tighter on launch I think?

as noted in the other thread with similar topic...I had the same noise & discovered it this morning...

I stopped at my dealers service dept on the way home from the office - they offered me an appointment for a thorough inspection of the rear some time next week or an immediate space on one of the lifts to pull the rear wheels and retorque the hub nuts & subsequently the lug nuts on both rear wheels...I took the opportunity to try & solve th eproblem today & think we did... torque on the axle nuts seems to have done th e trick as the noise is/was gone after I drove the car out of service dept.

good luck with yours

I just (today) gave mine in for a similar problem. The click (only 1) occured when I started moving just as the clutch was being let out (around 2000 rpm). They just called & told me that it was an axle nut that had worked loose. I'll find out later (when I pick it up) if that's all it was.
It's most likely the axel nuts. I had this problem, only from going from reverse to 1st, or vice versa.

Have them tightened and it should go away.

The dealer it for me. Anyone ever try to do it themself?

I have a pic of the TSB/Service Bulletin (may not technically be a TSB) in my photo album but I cannot seem to get it to work. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

Found it: Here is the text. probably the same for a 04 probably just needs to be re-torqued.

I had the exact same issue and was scared as hell it might be the diff. If not I thought for sure it was a CV joint.

Just as everyone else has said . . . . . it was the axle nut. retorqued and problem went away.

didn't know there way a TSB on it though.

Good info, thanx!
