I have noticed my 2001 making the same noises in 2nd and third gears. Ringing around 4k up and down and lots of buzz coming down through 4-3k. Another sound I have noticed that I have not heard anyone else talk about is knock that sounds almost hammer like when the throttle is stabbed to ~3k from idle with the clutch DISengaged. My mechanic thought it was a rod (!) at first until he noticed that with the clutch engaged, you cannot make the noise occur, in neutral or while driving. There is lots of strange rattle that happens when the clutch is first engaged in low gears and you are accel. through ~3k though. It sounds sloppy. Anyone hearing that knock just off idle with the clutch IN?

Anyway, this brings me to my question. Is this (clutch) TSB necessarry or is it a "if the customer complains, fix it" thing? Is this noise a sign of inevitable doom or just annoying? I don't trust the mechanics at my dealership at all and would rather not have this done if it's not required. Either that or I would rather wait and find another dealer to perform the fix. That and I don't like the idea of having them do an alignment already as they never seem to get that right and the car always drives strange afterwards (brakes/accels with a slight left/right pull, etc). Plus, if these freaks need to keep the car for more longer than I can wait with it, it's not going to happen. they've abused my car's (while I watched) too many times and wrecked too many customer cars for me to leave mine there alone.

First, find a new dealer, quick!

Second, the clutch rattle TSB (054) is "if the customer complains" and does not mean impeding doom. It's just annoying as hell and seriously takes away from the drive-ability of the car (from a purely asthetic sounds point of view, not technically or mechanically)

Never had the knock sound so I can't help you there.

Thanks for the response. I imagine this noise could be common, but ppl just don't notice it. If it hadn't been for me getting curious about the rattle and knock while the clutch was disengaged/engaging, I wouldn't have sat there blipping the throttle, listening for it. Of course, I could have killed the transmission by letting my G/F drive it (er, try to drive it). Can you say whiplash?

Thanks!

I have recently bought a new S2000 (actually 3 weeks ago)... Last week it had its first service and all was fine. I should mention here I am no mechanic. But the past couple of days it has been making alot of strange noises which have irritated me to no end.

It actually makes a strange whirring noise in all gears, including when idling in neutral... the higher the revs, the louder the whirr.... However with the clutch in, the noise disappears completely strangely enough... This was defintely not present 3 or 4 days ago and is of great concern to me... I took it to the dealer who has arranged for it to be inspected by a Honda representative this Wednesday as they have never heard this type of problem before. When you drive the car it makes the same sort of noise as driving a crap car around in reverse. Any suggestions on what this might be? I am loathed to drive the car until this has been fixed as the noise is most annoying...

Sup.. my cars about a month old now. I too am experiencing the noises described on this post. The whirring sound on mine comes only when in 4th and 5th gears, starting at like 3k rpm... I also have the clutch rattle, if it really is the clutch rattling. And then theres the 1-2 2-3 grinds.. not TERRIBLE grinds, but grinds nonetheless. I also have this issue where if I make a sharp uturn, the front right tire will rub against the inner wheel well. Anyone else with this tire rubbing problem? If you read this, can you guys do me a favor, and next time when making a u turn, listen for the sound. Give it a lil gas... Thanks. Man, I guess Imma have to take my car in soon.

I have tried the U-turn and it is OK in my '01 S2000, however I have just come back from the dealer who is now ordering a complete replacement transmission and gearbox amongst other things to try and re-surrect my machine... 2-3 days in the shop after 3 visits to the the service centre...

Like I said before, I am no mechanic, but something was definitely not sounding right!

Are you sure it is a tire rubbing or could it be a moaning sound coming from the LSD. If it is the latter, then this is a "normal" sound inherent to the LSD.

Wait.. it does put out a moaning kind of sound. Almost like the tires are rubbing. Is that the sound you are talking about? Hopefully it is.... cuz I will be relieved if its the LSD making the noise, not my tires. But I still have to take it in for my other problems.
