Default Clutch Recommendations (from experience only!)

I search "clutch recommendation" and end up with 102 pages of posts, and nothing in the first 10 of them, so I'm making a new one here. If you have a link to it, tell me to shut the hell up and post the link . Based on EXPERIENCE what clutches can anyone in here recommend?

I'm unsatisfied with the borderline slipping I'm experiencing in my MY04 (17,000mi), so it's time for a new clutch. So far the major options I've seen:

ACT
ORC (Ogura Racing Clutch)
ATS (Active Traction Service)

This is a car that is mostly for my own enjoyment out in the countryside, but will one day see a BR Performance s/c and occasional weekend track days. Clearly there are some major price gaps here, but to me if it's worth it I'll pony up, but if it's only a marginal benefit I have better things to spend $1000 on.

One of my main concerns with the OCR and ATS clutches is the replacement flywheel. If Honda does a dynamic balance on the engine, including the flywheel, during manufacture, then replacing the flywheel will throw this off and possibly lead to premature wear failure due to increased vibration. Does anyone have any knowledge in regards to this?

Thanks ahead for your help

May i add my "Experience." When i got my clutch installed (Exedy Hyper Single) and by the way this kit comes with a flywheel, My installer called me to tell me it was ready and while i did install gears also, his words were "damn, this thing spin sooo fast" He was freaking out to how qucik the car was reving.

I only say this cause buddy has installed Numberous gears and clutches in our cars, and i asked him "but man havent u put 4.77's in and what not, how come you say it acts diff." his answer was no one had installed this particular clutch kit, and i suppose perhaps it was the lighest of the set up's.

This is opnly my experience, while i do see ALOT of people here knock the Exedy for its wear life, i think ive founf it's all about how u work the clutch and whether you ride it at all or not.

Ive been going strong over 7k already on this clutch, and in conclusion, i think its THE SHIT, i wouldnt have gone any other setup, maybe that ogura clutch and thats about it, Hehe, hope i helped.

Hardtopguy offers a clutch combo which is top notch and will fit most needs below 300 hp.

With this kit you will received a Comptech lightened Flywheel, ACT HD pressure plate, OEM disc, and OEM throw out bearing. This is our recommended set up for the S2000. It is a must if you are supercharged or turbocharged.

$899

Some people are even running over 450hp with that setup with no problems! Bang for your buck, this is the best clutch setup.

However, if you are interested in an ATS clutch, bluesaint is selling one right now in For Sale.

SPEC has been the best clutch ive ever used and installed on many cars.

Here are some reviews from my experience.....

EXEDY....Very harsh engagement. Also, for some reason, if driven wrong, it will last 7000 miles. Ive seen people kill them very quickly.

Clutchmasters....Good clutches, but a bit too grabby. They also like to chatter.

ACT...Not a personal fan, but others had great things to say about them. Ive installed ACT on my friends 240, and we werent happy with it.

Centerforce....great clutches, bad customer service.

For the money and performace, I would rate SPEC #1 in my book.

Other opinions may vary.

Mugen pressure plate OEM disk....Nice grip no slip.. Not much heavier pedal effort.

I had the ACT PP/Clutch with the toda lightweight flywheel and highly recommend the combination. It lasted over 40k miles until I had it replaced at 67k miles. There was some hot spotting on the flywheel and the clutch disk displayed some wear.

The con regarding this setup is the heavier pedal effort. I really didn't notice it until I drove another S and felt like I was going to push my foot through the floorboard.

great information! thanks everyone for your replies.

It looks like the HardtopGuy offer probably makes the most sense for now. Definitely cheapest of the similar metal clutch setups. Why do they offer the OEM Honda disc instead of the ACT Street Disc? Also is there any reason to prefer the Mugen PP over the ACT?

Also I am curious about SPEC. I've not really heard a lot about them, but this is the second time I've heard someone with nothing but good to say about them. Can anyone else vouch?

The ATS bluesaint has for sale seems like a great deal as well. Is the carbon type total overkill for the 300 hp s/c S2000 I'm planning on making, or will I see some benefit in consistency during long track days and an overall longer service life? Increased pedal effort isn't a big issue to me, I daily drove an un-spring 4puck with ACT extreme disc in my old integra for about a year. Man that sucked in traffic, but any other time it was a lot of fun.
