No wonder I got out of the insurance business. I had to deal with people that couldn't understand why certain coverage didn't cover something they felt should be covered by another coverage.

Anyway here's a link from my old employer on the difference between the two. Remember that this falls in the category of a COLLISION and not vandalism since another vehicle COLLIDED with your parked car.

Either way, your car was parked and I would think that it should NOT affect your premium. Best bet is to READ YOUR POLICY CONTRACT. That is the "bible" for your policy. If there's something you don't understand, contact your insurance company or post it here and I'll try to interpret it for you.

Thanks for all your input!

This makes a big difference to me because I have a $500 deductible on my Collision, but a $100 deductible on my Comp.

Here's what the Police said when I filed the report:
S..2000...? Is that like an Accord? There's no witness so it's not hit and run, so it's a property damning report, which is comprehensive.

Here's what a state farm agent said: (Had a friend call anonymously)
You didn't catch the guy who did it so it counts as an uninsured motorist. 200 deductible.

Here's what the Start Farm website says:
Collision
Pays for damage to a covered vehicle caused by collision with another object or by upset of the car. A deductible is required.
Comprehensive
Pays for loss of or damage to a covered vehicle, except loss caused by collision or upset. Examples include loss caused by fire, wind, hail, flood, vandalism, theft or impact with an animal. A deductible may apply.
Uninsured Motorist
Pays damages when a covered person is injured in an auto accident caused by a driver who does not have liability insurance. In some states this coverage may also pay for property damage.

I'm so confused! I'm going to get an estimate first before I contact State Farm just in case.

i'm not saying to LIE. i'm just saying if someone did hit your car and you have no idea if it was a car or a bat thats why its listed as a comprehensive or the uninsured motorist. the reason i am saying this is because i had the similar situation done to me and it was under a comp which saved me a lot of money due to the deductible. anyway, good luck! tell us how it goes

Doesn't really matter whether it's Comp or Collision. It's actually UNINSURED MOTORISTS. That's all that matters and it's covered by your UM part of your policy. In some states UM has ZERO deductible.

In Colorado, Uninsured Motorist coverage is for injury, not vehicle damage, therefore would be n/a to this type of claim. Sounds like a collision claim to me.

koshiro,

I'm in the EXACT same boat as you right now...only my HUGE scratch is on the rear bumper. My deductibles are almost the same as well ($500 collision, $200 comprehensive).

I filed the claim and it was considered "collision." I tried to debate it, but it was to no avail. So I'm stuck with the bill...the damage is less than $500 in my case. But the good news is that my rates wouldn't have gone up.

I think I got my mess cleared up. Thank you everyone!

The estimate from Spectrum body shop was $400 to fix and paint the front bumper. As much as I'd hope it would be comprehensive (only $100 deductible for me), State Farm count it as uninsured motorist ($200 deductible). Their reasoning was that since there's no proof that it wasn't a collision, they will assume it's a collision. But because the colliding vehicle could not be identified, as is its insurance, my claim falls under 'uninsured motorist'.There won't be any rate increases, State Farm assured me.

So in all I'm paying $200 because someone backed into me. It could have been worse I guess.

I'm hoping the repainting will also help cover up all my rock chips while they're at it
