Default column cover (upper)

So I've been trying to replace the interior dash upper column cover, the black piece of plastic cover right behind the steering wheel and before the dash instruments and I keep breaking the 4 little tabs at at the bottom of the cover trying to get it in there. These 4 tabs work in conjunction with 4 clips to hold the cover in place, but they keep getting bent when trying to install the cover. Those who have dealt with this cover should know what I am talking about. Any ideas on the best way to install without breaking said clips? Will I need to remove something to get at it?

Try using a flat head screwdriver with a cloth to guide each tab. The cloth will prevent scratching.

Well, figured it out, so I just thought I'd post in case anyone else ever attempts this. To put the upper column cover on without breaking the clips, you'll have to remove the bottom column cover first, then you'll be able to get the top cover on without breaking the clips. Once the upper cover is in place, then install the bottom. It is just a matter of sequence, previously I tried installing the top cover on while the botton was already in place.

I am having trouble getting the clips/tabs on the bottom and top pieces to stay together when re-installing. Any ideas?

The top cover comes off easier if you lower the steering column, two bolts keep it mounted upwards, when you loosen the two bolts on the black metal U-shaped holder the steering column lowers and the cover comes off easier after the lower part is loosened.

If you broke the clips try sealing the parts together with ultra-black gasket sealer or some other strong adhesive, or buy a new part.

Turns out one of the "male" pieces of plastic on the top column cover fractured, and that was causing the top and bottom column covers to not stay together.

^ slather a big goop of permatex ultra-black or ultra-grey gasket sealer on the male and female end and close them up and hold them closed with tape. After 20 minutes the sealer cures and will hold them tight, remove tape as needed. I use that on tons of broken parts and works every time .
