Default Comparing the S2000 with the Boxster 2.7 and Boxster S

I have calculated the average power in various rev ranges for the subject cars. The cars in question were Krazik's S2000 and two Boxsters provided by Davidm. This is power at the wheels, so drivetrain losses were taken into account.

Please take note that this is not representative of actual performance, as other factors play an important part (like vehicle weight and actual gearing, although power does take potential benefits from gearing into account).

Note also that dyno runs can vary a lot and I only took one dyno run for each car. Max power was 202HP, 195HP and 218HP, respectively for the S2000, Boxster 2.7 and Boxster S, which is fairly representative, I think.

I may still do the Mugen S2000 as published by Mugen later on.

So here are the results, without any comments.

Draw your own conclusions.

They will all run.
The S 2000 matches up better in those numbers, than some I have seen. But hey, at 9000 RPM the Porsche would have blown

Luis,

Interesting.

So how about horsepower / weight for each of those? Seems like that would be useful.

Thanks Luis, a little while ago I made up a speed/power chart with all three cars (as well as 200SX and WRX) and your numbers seem to sumarize that pretty well.

For people who are interested in some other factors then here's some specs:

Weight = 1259kg, 1260kg, 1295kg (for the S2000, Boxster 2.7 and S respectively). This is with just 'standard' equipment.

Gearing (at redline):
S2000 speed at 9000 revs:
1st - 69km/h
2nd -105km/h
3rd - 144km/h
4th - 186km/h
5th - 223km/h
6th - 266km/h
--------------
BoxterS speed at 7200 revs:
1st = 63km/h
2nd = 109km/h
3rd = 159km/h
4th = 198km/h
5th = 237km/h
6th = 287km/h
-------------
Boxster2.7 speed at 7000 revs:
1st = 65.6km/h
2nd =105.6km/h
3rd = 158.4km/h
4th = 206.4km/h
5th = 268.0km/h

Is that the 2.7 redline? I have used 7.200 that I read somewhere. Please confirm as that would have an impact on my numbers.

The weight is fairly similar for these cars. Unfortunately, short of weighing individual cars we don't know if they represent the reality. Standards vary a lot. In the EU weight specs are regulated and European constructirs have to report according to these regulations (which BTW scales in the 2.7 and S at 1335kgs and 1370kgs respectively). Unfortunately I cannot find an equivalent number for the S2000.

A nominal weight used to calculate a power to weight ratio for each range would be interesting.

I know the Boxster 2.7 has a difficult time on the track with the S2000 but the displacement of the 'S' makes it quicker around when well driven. But the 'S' does not have enough of an advantage to make up for a poor driver, as I passed one particular 'S' repeatedly one weekend.

Of course we could juggle ranges from now on, but I find that most of the twisty part of the tracks I run on are negotiated in the 6200-8000 range which would be 70-88% which may look look more like the 2.7 output.

You are right, Chris. The S and the 2.7 are roughly equivalent in that range. I suspect however that the S has a weight advantage when compared to an equipped boxster 2.7 and more so to a Boxster S.

This is a plot of power against rev range of the Boxster 2.7 and S2000.

Hi Luis,
Looking though where I keep all the data, it seems that 7k is the redline for the Boxster 2.7 ... though I'm having a hard time finding my original source (magazine) ... I remember it took me a while to find the gearing for the 2.7 in the first place.

Also, I looked though a very good Boxster2.7 thread that was happening a while ago in the racing forum and this is extracted from it:
----------------------------
... I did run the 2.7 out in 2nd. Riding on the limiter the RPM's are at about 7300 and indicated speed is 72mph. 7000rpm looked more like 68-69mph.
----------------------------
We were talking about redline/cut-out so concidering that we're talking abot 7k again, I'd presume that the redline is at 7k for the Boxster2.7 ..... wish I could remember where exaclty I found the gearing/redline in th 1st place.

I've been interested to see rear wheel torque in each gear on a speed chart. The S2000 uses smaller wheels/tires (diameter) than most sports cars so the torque on the drive shaft can be lower but still be the same on the contact patch.

Nice chart but essentially useless without a note on vehicle weights....or am I missing something? There are 300 HP V-8's I knock off on a regular basis in my neighborhood.
