Default Comparing an s2000's vtec noise to a b16a2 - louder? Quieter?

I am interested in buying a honda. My friend has a civic hatchback with a b16a2. When vtec kicks in it is CRAZY loud, it turns people's heads on the highway. It's like the engine goes hummmmmmmmmmmmm-BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

What I would like to know, is does the vtec noise of the s2000 sound the same, louder, or quieter?

And if the vtec noise sounds quieter, would a different exhaust change that? I REALLY want people to hear vtec as loud as possible.

Lastly if any of you s2000 drivers have driven a hatch with a b16 engine, how does it compare in terms of power, low and high?

Get an intake and it will do something simlar. I had a stock before and my friends say it not that loud. But not with my comptech intake it crazy loud. Can't wait till I put the Spugen exhaust.

They sound very similar. I'd say the B16A has a little more "Grunt" to it once the vtec crossover point is reached. Getting an exhaust on the S2000 will only drown out that sound you're trying to hear. It's the engine that screams not the exhaust. If you really wanna amplify the sound, go with a CAI and a nice header (Not DC sports) and leave the exhaust stock.

As far difference in feel yes I

I have owned a 2000 Si and now a 2002 S2k. I would say stock vs. stock the S2k is louder. The reason your buddy's car turns heads is because of the exhaust. I had a Comptech on my Si, and it was perfect! It is easy to make the B16 loud and obnoxious.

A B-16 with an AEM intake on it sounds wicked in vtec. Someone once said it sounded like a SawzAll on a Beer Keg.

Stock for Stock, the S2K is louder, but this an intake I think the B-16 might be louder.

I used to have a MY 94 Del Sol with the B16A3 engine. The sound of the engine, when switched to the higher lift(VTEC), was much, much more distinct. I swear it sounded bitchen. Almost like two lions roaring. Roar is what it would do when VTEC kicked in at 5,400 rpm. I could be hearing things, but it seems like the transition to VTEC on my MY 03 S2K seems a little bit more distinct since I bought it nearly 3 months and 2,500 miles ago. I kinda miss the roar of the B16A3, but I like my S2K much, much more. In the future, I would like to get a Toda header, a good cat back and a CAI.

I did not buy this car to impress anybody. I bought it because I love to drive. As a matter of fact, I love to go fast, I have a passion for racing. Anybody who feels this way knows exactly what I talkin about. Anyway, that is another story. It would be nice to have my car ROAR. I wanna set off a car alarm or two. I wanna idle down my street at 3:00 am, hopelessly trying to be quiet. I want to rev the engine up to 9k going through a tunnel. More importantly, I want a little bit more power, acceleration and speed.

Sometimes the cars we drive represent our unique personalitys. Like I said, I did not buy my S2K to impress anyone, but a little extra SOUND just might reflect part of who I am.

So RACER you are saying my friend's hatch's vtec will sound louder than my future s2k? Will it still sound louder if I buy a CAI?

I owned a 92 Civic HB before the S2000. In it was a JDM B16A (SiR II). Just incase you're not familiar with this engine, it makes 170HP at the crank and spins up to 8200RPM. The transition into VTEC was at least 2X louder and more pronounced than the F20C. The surge in acceleration was simply because the low cam profile sucks. The B16A produces next to nothing at low RPMs. But if you're just out to compare sounds, the B16A is way louder without a doubt.
