You leave it in the holster. It's not actually plugged in to anything.

Sorry, I meant what if it's actually plugged in to the socket, under normal driving. Does it affect anything?

Right, see the green female socket in the pic above, you can either plug the male blue plug into it, or you can clip in into the holder.

My question is, what happens if the blue plug is plugged into the green socket during normal driving. I presume something is then in diagnostic mode?

What you call a green female socket is just a rubber holster. It has no connections.

Ah, didn't notice that, i've never really looked under there too much My car is in for work at the moment so I couldn't check. I'm sure on my old Impreza there were very similar connectors which did plug into each other.
