S2000typeR also had an E46 M3 with the SMG semiauto. Send him a PM...

And if one of the main reasons for "stepping up" to an M3 is practicality, space (cargo and/or passengers), etc., I say keep the S and get a minivan.

This thread sparked me to go to BMW today just to see what the M3 is all about. Unfortunately they did not have any available for test drive purposes, but he said they'll have one I can drive next week (sounds like SMG tranny).

The problem is... after getting to sit it in and really take a good look at it... I realized I just simply don't like it as much as the S2000.

i've driven both, the torque in the m3 is amazing but the s2k was just more fun to drive. the s2k is like a toy, and thats a good thing. the m3 felt very heavy and "floaty" if you know what i mean.

keep the s2k and with the money saved, get a speedcraft turbo or vortech supercharger and you'll have as much hp as a M3 in a lighter chassis.

yea ive heard alot bout it. supposedly they fixed the problem by now, but the earlier e46 has so many complaints that bmw even actually "extended" the warranties on those made before the certain date that they got all the things fixed. ive read in the m3 forums that some of the e46 m3 had blown engines even before they got to break it in, or even when its casual driving. (theres a comp on board that registers abuse ..ie over-reving).

[B]kster - I just want it known I did not intend to infer the M3 was just a 328.

My thoughts are don't get one. Go to the Car Talk section and read the thread on the one year update with the M3.
