I would think it would be the other way around to not stress the battery before starting.. IDK

I always start the engine BEFORE putting the top up or down, so the top operation doesn't drain the battery. I think it's just a recommendation Honda makes for safety reasons. If there were any chance of damaging the car, they'd have put some kind of lockout in to prevent the top from operating while the engine was running.

The 05 owners manual does not have such a warning (at least not on pages 61-62). What year and where in the owners manual did you see this warning?

I don't remember reading this either, and it would be easy for Honda to enforce mechanically. The already require the e-brake to be up a vehical speed sensor reading of 0mph.

What year manual and what page?

Same here, and I try to remember to put the top back up before I shut it off.
