I used Intercity Lines to transport my new S2000 from near Chicago to the SF Bay Area. The cost was $1300 (eastbound quotes should be significantly lower) and I was very pleased with the service. The car was delivered in an enclosed trailer to my home, and in pristine condition. Intercity Lines gave me the lowest covered transport quote, out of more than a dozen carriers I contacted. They're also widely regarded as one of the best auto carriers in the country.

I had mine transported from Ohio to San Diego for about $500. I ordered my car from an Ohio dealership and had it shipped over to California.

I've transported a car from Maryland to Goergia with a Uhaul and a car trailer. It was years ago (not the S) but it worked great.

My dad bought a 1964 Corvette about 5 years ago. The car was in mid Georgia and needed to come home to New York. He used Top Gun transporters. Bout $900 if I remember correctly. Car arrived perfect.

There is one thing you need to find out before you hire a truck transporter. This is very IMPORTANT! Will the car stay in the trailer for the entire duration of the trip? Some companies will drop off your car in a lot for a day or so. They do this because there may be another job for them along the way to your new home. It is faster for them to pickup your car, drop it off in some random lot, run off for the quick job, then come back and pickup your car and complete the trip. Top Gun does not drop off the car. Once it is on the trailer it stays there door to door. The trailer has a hydraulic system so the cars can be moved around and the ones in the back can be brought forward. Very cool. This company deals with some high end machines. When the truck pulled in front of my house there was a 275GT, Brabus SL class, 67 Vette tri-power and a 356 speedster in there. Good luck and be careful.

$700 from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Los Angeles. I was quoted $900 for an enclosed trailer. The company was DAS, Dependable Auto Shipper or something like that... I chose to save $200 because I wouldn't be able to tell whether they actually used an enclosed trailer or not anyways... so why bother giving them extra money?

Car arrived fine and I think they even washed it for me. (I'm sure it was dirty as hell during that 10 day trip...) The only draw back was that it took them 10 days to ship it. I wish they could ship it faster...

If something had happened to my car, I would've ask them to compensate for the damamges anyway. So I don't really think enclosed trailers are worth it. Just wax your car real good before you ship it out and hope for the best!

Be sure to read the liability portions of the contract carefully. Most shippers I talked to fully insure the car for any damage they cause while loading or unloading the car, but exclude things like paint damage from debris on the highway, hail damage, etc. they consider beyond their control. If you elect to hire an open carrier, ask that the car be second in line in the top row, as this (according to one shipper I talked to) is the most protected spot.

I agree that an enclosed trailer may offer more protection than is needed for a car that isn't new, or like-new. If you shop around on the www you may turn up some good deals from shippers with partially full loads that are already going your way. You may also want to call moving companies as they sometimes roll cars onto partially full moving vans/trailers to fill out the load. That might give your baby an enclosed ride for bargain price.

I used Dependable Auto Shippers DASautoshippers.com to get mine from MA to CA coast to coast for $895 enclosed carrier. I did have to pick it up form their CA terminal but I live near it. I got a good rate because of my dealer. Regular enclosed shipping for that distance is $1500. No problems. I could also track their progress online with a tracking number.

Sort of surprised nobody else said it, but... Why not drive the S2000? There are a lot of awfully nice, fun roads between Califormia and Texas... I'm anticipating a move from Texas to D.C., and I sure do look forward to the trip!

I just did what Sato did for my Alfa earlier this month. It was surprisingly easy to drive a big truck with the trailer and Alfa, even through the hills of Pennsylvania. The only other expense to consider is the gas- I got about 9mpg for the trip. Oh yea, and the tolls, if there are any between CA and TX. I had a friend ride along to help load and unload, bought him a one way flight back home to Ohio for $90.

But then again, as djl Yellow suggested, I would've driven it, but it's not running now
