Crispy S2000 Engine Fire
Got my check from insurance today. After only a week of "discussion", we settled on $18,300. Just FYI.
The only way I could get this was that I had kept my service records and had the mileage on the infamous "oil change" from the dealer. The insurance adjuster said he couldnt get the mileage from the car after the fire, and just assumed "normal" mileage (100000), instead of the 10,300 she had on her.
I am looking at a new one again now, but still want to know what is happening in 2009 model. Can't seem to get an accurate answer to that. Certainly not from the dealerships. When would the 2009's go on sale in US??

Yes. In the service manual it says to tighten to 7/8 of a turn beyond where it first makes contact. In the owners manual it says to tighten to 7/8 of a turn beyond where it first makes contact. ON THE OIL FILTER ITSELF it says to tighten to 7/8 of a turn beyond where it first makes contact. They even print little numbers 1 through 8 on the filter to make it easy.
And yet, people still seem to think that just because they know better, they can ignore that....

check your oil filter. i had that same problem with me. there was a second gasket stuck in the oil filter hole when i was changing it. a few weeks later, i was driving it, and it all of a sudden caught on fire. luckily i reacted quick and had a case of 24 pack of ice mountain water in the back of my trunk. put that out quick and saved my S. it was just a few burnt wires and a bunch of oil spilt all over the engine bay.

Wow, I peek under my hood to check my oil and give the engine bay a good look over to make sure everything is good... so now I guess I should be checking my filter for tightness as well. I do my own oil change, use stock filter (cause I don't trust anyone else!
) I'm really glad that nothing happened to the driver during the fire. Poor S!
I had an engine fire once... it wasn't huge but it scared the crap out of me!! Me and a friend were able to put it out with a shirt. Kind of smother it... my SR20's exhaust manifold had a breather hose that started resting on it and there was some exposed rubber and... you know what happened.. it was so scary! I remember driving home and seeing chunks of flaming material on the road in my rear view... so scary.
