Cutting glove compartment
Ya, it's quite a lot of work for that tiny space. Well, I'm really just thinking of putting the proximity sensor there. Because that's in the center of the left/right sides of the car, as well as from the top of the car. The secret compartment seems to be too high up, and would be overly sensitive to the roof area for rain, etc, and not enuff sensitivity for the doors -- I'm thinking of getting rid of the useless shock sensor, and get the proximity to tell people to stay away from the soft top.
Also, it'd be a good place to keep the wheel lock there. I don't wanna keep it in the trunk or regular glove compartment, since that's where thieves would look immediately for it.
I guess I'll try to locate a glove compartment from a junk yard and cut that one.

Why don't you just take the thing off, mount it underneath it, the put the box back on? It makes no sense to cut it just to put a sensor there.
If your proximity sensor has a low profile, or if you can take it out of the case, just place it under the leather console. I have a MY'01, and the rear part of the console can be separated from the front part by dremeling out some plastic riveting. I have a few pieces of velcro to hold it in place and when I need to adjust the sensor, I just lift up that part of the console. It is otherwise invisible. You can also use a magnetic reed switch to switch it on/off, so that no switches are visible.

That particular location has worked well for the sensor over the past few years, since it's positioned so that you can make adjustments without being a circus performer. On the other hand, this may tie into that other thread about picking up chicks
once they see your flexibility.
