I'd like to hear this as well because my belief is that the S as well as any other manual shift car has equipment that accounts for gear skipping and it should not be an issue.
Obviously if your engine is at 9000rpm at 40mph and you try to pry it into 6th, the synchros have alot of work to do and will wear quicker. However, if you allow the revs to match naturally, I really cannot see a problem. Until someone comes up with a good reason as to why I'm messing up my car, I will continue to skip gears.

I can understand if you're abusing the car, things will break, but others are implying that in average day to day driving skipping gears is harmful, which I do not believe it to be.

I heard another person saying this, but he wasn't able to give me a reason.
Does anyone know why holding on to the shifter is bad?
Thanks

Dan

its just because people are firm believers that you should always have two hands on the wheel, as you would driving an automatic. (better control) theres no negative effect on the tranny if you have your hand on the knob.

I would say it's because the tranny is obviously spastic. Just driving around you can see the shifter shaking. Resting your hand on it wouldnt be a big deal. I think it's mostly referring to HOLDING it against that natural movement. Trying to keep it still against the shake will cause problems.

I have heard that resting your hand on the shifter prematurely wears out the shift forks. I don't know that to be true. As far as coasting in Neutral versus downshifting, I was always under the assumption that replacing brakes was cheaper than replacing clutches or transmissions.

Thanks!

It's too bad that the pictures have been lost. The guys who don't want to listen to good advice when it's offered need to see the damage, so they can learn that some of the people here are actually giving them excellent advice.

You guys go ahead and skip gears during your upshifts if you like, but when you have transmission problems, don't blame the car. If you do, be sure you're wearing your Nomex.

You've been warned.
