Ok, last night, I must've had the Stupid Driver Error curse or something, and I mis-shifted my '02 S2000 three times in one trip! Two times were on the freeway - from 3-2 (getting on the on-ramp) and from 5-4. The third time was on the city streets - I went from 5-2! None of the mis-shifts occurred at very high RPMs. Each time, after accidentally shifting into the wrong gear, the RPMs ended up at about 4.5K-5.5K (I am relatively slow at shifting during normal driving, so my RPMs drop a bit more than some people when the clutch is in).

My question is - is this likely to cause any damage? Especially to anything other than the clutch? I can stand shortening the life of the clutch a little, but I hope nothing else will sustain damage from this series of dumb shifting mistakes.

Thanks for your input! I did search through the archives, but most of the previous posts on mis-shifts deal with those occurring at high RPMs. Does this mean I'm ok, since my blown shifts didn't happen at high RPMs?

 

Mis-shifting really won't do much damage to anything unless you are doing it at very high rpms. The biggest worry, is that if you do it often, you are going to drastically shorten the life of the clutch, syncronizers, and blocking rings. I am just as guilty as you are because i've misshifted twice since i've gotten my car. It seems like the ultra close shifter makes it easy to mis-shift.

 

I think most of us have mis-shifted a few times...... very easy to do.... as long as you didn't redline while down shifting you will be fine.

And don't worry kster, I'm not abusing the car *too* much. =) Actually, I'm getting the hang of it, just still a little slow getting going in 1st.

Just remember. The shifter automaticly centers itself in the 3rd and 4th gear gate. From there it is a simple up or down.
