I don't know about other S2000s but mine is more smooth when I finesse shift it. There is a noticeable two step action upshifting in every gear. 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th. You will meet a resistance point then if you just keep directional pressure it will just suck or pop in naturally and be really smooth.

I have a 3rd gear notch when upshifting but if I apply the same method of shifting where I meet that resistance and let it suck in by itself it is way smoother where the notch is no longer there. Pulling down when going from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th is easy to do this two stage shift but 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th requires more precision.

How many out there just ram it into gear and how many just finesse it in?

Light touch does not mean slow shifting with the S2000. I still use my 3rd gen RX-7 as the comparison standard for manual shifters. 1st to 2nd took some effort from the shoulder, even when the car was fairly well warmed up. All shifts required considerably more effort than does the S2000. Most importantly, the clutch required the strength of King Kong to depress to the floor, while the S2000 clutch is quite light. Perhaps the lightness is in part attributable to the fairly low engine torque level which is the subject of so many threads around here.

When I was in a really good mood I would "speed shift" and chirp the mess out of my back tires from 1-2nd. Just ask Jboggs. He said he had never heard an S2000 chrip 2nd like mine.

I think a light touch gets you a smoother (and faster) shift.

With the way the tranny is and with what Woodwork wrote about shifting the S2K, light is the best way to shift this car.
