i think i remember an episode of top gear where they prove that an automatic car wash actually does less damage to your cars paint, but it doesnt get it as clean

I've seen that one, they had 3 identical cars detailed by a pro. then each were taken to different locations (automated car wash, hand car wash, i forget the third one) to see which did the most damage. out of the 3, the automated gave the least amount of swirls.

however, it's always best to wash your car yourself with the *proper* materials. that is, unless you don't have access to a hose / driveway and live in a condo.

I have been warned at the car wash that it might be too low, and get scratched up underneath, but when I told them I was confident it would clear, they said ok and put it through, but Im at stock height so it isnt an issue.

I went through a car wash awhile back and when I was inside the car wash I noticed water coming inside due to the pressure to the jets. I will never go back!

i saw a guy downtown chicago wash his truck with a mop and bucket. and thats no lie. the guy is known in the area as a drug user. nice guy when you talk to him. but it's clear all his brain cell aren't there.
funny thing is, his truck (mid 90's ford ranger) is always cleaner then my S.

Everyone that takes their car to a car wash should go look at your cars in the sunlight, those light round circles are called swirls that was put there by the automatic car washes. It's possible to get swirls from a handwash too, but you can take greater care.
