Did VSA save me or is it being overly active?
Don't plan on turning VSA off, so the thread isn't about that. I'll double-check tire psi, but I still just don't know for sure. The tires are also OEM spec.
It was definitely a curve and not a corner. People were passing me at my current speed.

my guess is your cruise control was applying throttle to maintain 45mph in the middle of the curve and VSA thinks you shouldn't be applying throttle hence it blinked and cancelled your cruise settings.
There's some false information in this thread pertaining to when VSA kicks in.
the following post has some good information explaining how VSA works:

How much you can push your car before VSA kicks in is affected by the dimensions of your tire as well. In other words, if you go wider than OEM, VSA will kick in at a different limit.
Most S2K owners w/ VSA reports that it allows you to screw around to 9/10th of the car's limit.
Having tracked with VSA-on, and driving in heavy snow & rain, VSA has very interest behavior.
VSA sometimes kicks in way too early, sometimes it kicks in way too late. It all depends on why it has to save the driver.

OP What type of tires are you running? You said "OEM Spec" but if they're garbage Riken's or something like that, then that could be your problem too.
I run 225/255 Sumitomo's and I generally have to try to get VSA to kick on unless there's debri, or seriously cold roads/tires, and these are by no means the greatest tires on the market.
I'm not even going to bite hard into the VSA argument. You can drive very fast through the twisties without ever engaging it. I'm not sure how much faster I'd need to go on public roads. If you drive with VSA on, and you feel like it's limiting your speed in canyon runs, then you probably either need to take some driving courses to learn how to turn properly, or you're just that good and you should probably be taking it to a track to get your thrills at that point.

My car has the OEM tires. Potenza Re-050's. The rears are new, the fronts have plenty of thread.
