a different spot for an airhorn?
I've seen various discussions on installing the FIAMM air horns, but they've all been mounted in front of the radiator, and seem to require the removal of the whole front end of the car! Has anyone tried installing them in the engine compartment? There's plenty of room there, and I would think the horns would still be plenty loud.
Any ideas where/how they could be placed, if it's a decent idea that is?

Jim,
I use the Hellas X2 airs but I have them mounted on the left-side front pointed at a 45-deg downward direction as you open the hood (on the inner fender area). I don't like the idea of mounted them in the grill if the open-end of the horns point forward. It creates an air catcher at high speeds.

Jim,
My installer thought about putting them in the engine compartment, but you really want them in the front so that the sound throws forward. He didn't have to take the bumper off at all. All you have to do it take the black plastic cover off that's in front of the radiator. From there, you can work from the top of the car and get at the stock horn. It's just easier to do all the work if you takethe bumper off, but not necessary.

I installed the dual Fiamm horns a few weeks ago in the engine compartment. My placement decision was influenced by many who had problems with the horns being exposed to water, rocks, bugs, etc. I installed the compressor in the right front side of the engine compartment using the hole that is already there. I just ran the lead from the existing horn back to that location and wired the relay to the small fuse box in front of the battery. I used steel pipe clamps to attach the horns to the compressor, and there was just enough room to point them toward the front grill. I guess it's possible that they are not as loud as they would be if they were down where the old horn is, but believe me -- these are pretty loud even with my mounting location. The other benefit is that the air hoses from the compressor to the horns is very short (maybe 3 inches), which gives me absolutely no delay when I hit the horn.
The install was fairly easy, although there is not a whole lot of space in the compartment to make final adjustments.

I have some large (and VERY loud) ones mounted in front of radiator. I did all the work from underneath the car w/o removing bumber and it wasn't difficult. You just remove the plastic cover under front end of car.
