Post DIFFERENTIAL FLUID

I am just curious to find out how many s2k owners use the Honda Diff Fluid ? I read all the oil journals and s2k owners use Mobile 1, Armsoil, etc. but no mention of the Honda stuff. I went out and purchased Mobile 1 and brought my car over to Honda/Acura automotive mechanic and he questioned me, 1st why are you using Mobile 1 75w/90 and why are you changing the Diff at 5k miles. I gave him explanation and he was like do what you want , but I would use the Honda stuff. He also said make sure that this does not void your warrenty.

I guess Iam just confused now. Help ! I want to do the right thing for my car. Is the Honda Diff fluid any good, they should know what there talking about right? Any input would be great.

There is NO "Honda" stuff. Honda USA and Honda Canada (car division) has no fluid that can be used in our diffs. The Oil Journals would have told you this. Honda car dealers must get S2000 rear diff fluid from Honda's MOTORCYCLE division.
If any Honda dealer puts in "in-house" diff fluid, they will destroy your diff within a matter of a couple of weeks to a few months. Those fluids are the VTM-4 fluids they put into the casings of CRVs, Pilots, etc.

With the exception a few, your Honda/Acura mechanic is quite clueless about things S2000. Go ahead, let him put in the Honda "in-house" fluid and get it documented as to exactly what he put in. Then, in a few weeks, you can demand a brand new diff from them. Quite a few "know-it-all" service techs have been responsible for giving owners new diffs so far.

they should know what there talking about right?
Not even close by a crotch hair.

why are you changing the Diff at 5k miles
Only the FIRST few thousand miles. It's to get all that break-in crud out of there. I guess you haven't seen the pictures posted lately of what the magnetic drain plug looks like on a brand new S2000 when the diff fluid was changed after only a few thousand miles, huh?

What they SHOULD know and what they DO know is not always the same.....

Read the threads here for your options on Diff fluid and make your own choice based on your driving style.

Changing your diff fluid at 5k is a great idea. I changed mine at 9k and the magnetic drag plug had a lot of goop stuck to it. Also, Mobil 1 75W-90 and LE-607 90W seem to be the best choices for our diffs depending on your climate. I chose 607 since I only drive my car during the warm summer months, but would use M1 if I drove it year-round.

Been using Redline 75W90,since the first change at 5000 miles, and I change it at least once a year(+/-12000 kms.) with good results.
Wanted to try Amsoil LE607,sold in marketplace, this year, but shipping is 3 times the price of oil,so ....

Amsoil does not make LE-607. 607 is made by Lubrication Engineers.

Yes, shipping hazardous materials is expensive; shipping them across national borders even more so. No way around that. Amsoil doesn't make LE-607 by the way; it's made by Lubrication Engineers.

just curious, how/what gets damaged in the diff by not having the right oil, and what kind of performance/reliability hit is it? i just had my old ticking diff replaced w/a new '04 a couple of weeks ago. i got it done by a guy who has never worked on an S2000 before, so i'm not sure what was put in. gonna call today.

aside from that, i bought some mobil 1 75w90 over the weekend. i've driven on the new diff for a few hundred miles now (5-600 maybe?)...would it be okay to replace the oil this early even if the correct stuff was put in?
Run your new diff with the new fluid for about 3000 to 5000 miles, then change it out. This is assuming it's the RIGHT fluid. If it's the WRONG fluid, get it out ASAP.

I can only show you these links about wrong fluid and damaged diffs:

I just had my Diff changed....12000 miles....
a little metal on the drain plug.... not as bad as some I have seen

it was really dirty... Dark brown/ black-ish and smelled

I went with LE607 looks good

Because it was so dirty... I run this stuff 5-6000 miles and change it again
