Exclamation DIY Cover for the Horizontal Carpet Humps

The sponsors on this site make excellent full-length floor mats that cover the horizontal frame (aka carpet humps). This is a substitute at best and may not withstand the daily wear-and-tear the humps go through, especially the passenger's side. Heck, if your girl has her heels on.... let me picture that for a moment okay back on topic... any abrasive sole or protruding objects (spurs anyone?) will render this solution useless! I don't know if anyone has done this before, but I wanted something to protect the hump and figured I'd give this a try. And I don't know how well it will stand up over time.

Here is what you will need:
-a roll of perforated cabinet liner at least 18" wide in your desired color
-scissor
-um... actually that's it!

Note: photos are linked in case they don't show up.

I used ConTact Grip Ultra Liner in black from Lowes (~$5). Its dimensions are 20"x48". It was wide and long enough for both the driver's and passenger's side.

Start by laying it on the carpet with one edge against the side sill (this is the "straight" side). Then proceed to cut the side against the transmission tunnel.

Cut holes for the floor mat hooks (driver's side only).

Place the floor mat back on! If you want to get fancy, you may remove the seat bolts and bolt the liner in.

I haven't cut the passenger's side because it was getting dark, but it looks a lot more complicated. We'll see how it goes. I have a feeling the passenger's side will tend to lift up, so it will need to be secured in the back somehow.

egh, looks like it would fall apart after a week of in and out, and I certainly don't like the look of that in my S2K.

Cool idea. I hate debating whether to ask friends to keep shoes on the floor mats and this might be a good way around that. The Rick's floor mats look great but as is the case with high quality stuff, they're expensive.

Thanks for sharing. I'm eager to see how the passenger side turns out

GREAT IDEA!!!!! I have been searching for so many solutions since i bought the car. Carpet was just to damn stiff and looked horrible sitting all lumpy. This stuff is flexible and will just blend in with my black interior. Thanks for sharing!!

I wonder if they have a red colored one that closely matches the mat/carpet color.

They're by the kitchen displays at both Home Depot and Lowes. I didn't see any black ones at HD, so I went to Lowes instead. Ask for kitchen cabinet liner. ACE hardware may have some as well, but in limited colors. I think the material is quite resilient and has the perfect toughness AND flexibility. I had a hard time ripping it and it had some give when cutting with a pair of scissor, so I imagine it will hold up well over time.
