I learned a new term up at Lime Rock. It was pedal waving. Its when you take your foot off the gas and wave it over the brake as you go through a turn then slam it back on the gas!!!

I have taken to doing it a lot more now that I know about it.

I'm actually a great fan of the 'brake load' philosophy. When you're waving I'm actually putting very slight pressure on the pedal. What this does is allow all the suspension to take up any slack and the weight to shift to the front wheels so that if I have to use my brakes, there is no slack take up before the braking effect.

It's the same technique you learn in defensive driving when approaching a side street where a car is waiting. In this case, should you have to brake suddenly, 'brake loading' dramatically reduces stopping distance.

Pinky is referring to a psychological ploy used to assist drivers to go faster by not actually doing what your mind is telling you to do, i.e., hit the brakes, but instead, to fake yourself out into believing you used the brakes, when in fact you didnt have to....if that makes any sense (it's late).

A brake wave is used to fake-out any following drivers. The harder you wave, the better the fake-out. Tail-gaters will be left in your dust!

Wan't it Derek Bell who told us about this, Pinky? He was talking about a downhill into a right hand sweeping turn at the Lime Rock course. He said you really don't need to brake, even though your mind tells you to. So, he said, just wave you foot over the brake, and that's all the braking you need .
