The VIN was still there! If it was recovered and declared salvage, the insurance company should have notified the owner.

I've owned 3:

#1 traded in. Two months later, the new owner (many states away), sent me back my garage door opener that was under the dash. Nice guy and nice note. I tried to get in touch with him to thank him, but his phone was disconnected.

#2 Bought one for my son when he returned from Afghanistan. Took the seat out to install a bys low rail for him, and there was a drivers license from the previous owner. I sent a FB message, and a letter. No response...

#3 Bought new in 07, The dealer keeps contacting me to trade it in on a new Honda. Like....really?

I returned a CD that the prior owner left in the OEM player about a month after I bought the S (took that long for me to actually use it) along with a nice note. I simply sent it to the address on the label she stuck on the owners manual, and had no preconceptions about getting a response.

Previous owner added me on Facebook which is cool with me! He likes to see what people end up doing to the cars that he's sold.

Good topic! I've had my S for ten years now and I contacted the previous owner a few times during I'm guessing about the first five years of ownership. This is the main reason why I prefer private party transactions now versus dealerships when it comes to car buying.

I only called the previous owner of mine when the battery died and I needed the radio code. Luckily he had it handy still.

When I bought my S2000 from the original owner, he said to email/call him with any questions I had about the car in the future. I contacted him once and sent him a picture, he replied and said it was nice to get an update on the car.

Also contacted the previous owner of my TSX about a year after I bought it, she replied and was very helpful.
