Unless you plan to do VTEC right after leaving your driveway, there's no reason to let the engine warm to 3 bars before you can drive it.

I only warm it as long as it takes me to put on the seat belt. I'd take it easy without rapid acceleration or high revving until 3 bars.

I tend to keep below 5k revs until after it has reached 3 bars .... but I do start it up and drive off pretty much straight away ....

I usually don't warm my car up, I just don't go near vtec until after about 10 mins of easy driving.

I was told by a friend mechanic something about it not lubricating the top end enough unless you drive it.

You guys that leave it warm up without driving it do you vtec straight away? The three bars is only an indication of temperature not oil pressure etc so if you think sweet Ive got three bars 9K here I come then imo that is v. bad

Not whinging (much) but I think that a high performance car like ours should come with an oil pressure gauge at least.

I drive the car gently right out of the garage and stay out of VTEC until 3 bars. Having said that, my others cars with oil pressure gauges usually register normal operating ranges within 20 sec. This is different than operating temp as Austblue points out.

I may be incorrect but it is necessary to achieve correct operating temp (3 bars) so not to overheat the internal components of the engine to quickly.

My two cents

Greg

I usually wait until 2 bars, then I start driving it like a Geo Metro for about 2 miles or 3 bars...which ever comes first.

And after that......well............you know.

Do not run before 1 or 2 minutes of idling.
After start your driving, do not use Vtec till have the 3 bars on.

After you drive for a long using Vtec or very hi revs, do not park the car and switch off the engine immediately. Let it run in idle for 1 minute or 2 minutes before stop it.

When the car is cold, it will idle at about 1,900rpm's, I let it get down to about 1,400 before I go anywhere. It will warm up to 2 bars right after I start driving.
