Do you really have to have a front license plate?

After getting my S2000 in April I just couldn't stand putting on the front license plate. I know it's required unless you have some kind of special permit not to, but so far I haven't gotten in any kind of trouble for not putting it on.

Do any of you similiar rebellious folks out there have any experience with this, especially those of you in California?

I think the majority of owners don't put it on unless it was on when they bought the car. At the last So. Cal. meet I think there were only 1 or 2 cars with the front plate out of 25 attendees. I've had the car for a year and don't have the front plate on.

Havn't had a front plate on my Miata or S2K ever. Never been hassled for not having one. Can't say I have never received a traffic ticket, however.

It's required by law here in Texas.

But I live in an area where there are alot of Jaguar, Mercedes, and Porshe owners that NEVER have a front license plate.

I got pulled over once, but the cop just gave me a warning. Cops overlook the license plate thing on higher end cars...but pick on the high school civic owners.

I have been ticketed by Campbell Police Dept for not having a front license plate on my '93 Prelude. This was about 5 years ago. I had a cop friend of mine sign it off and paid the 10 bucks. So far I have not been harrassed at all with S2K. My car has received 2 speeding tickets. But nothing said about the license plate.

I'm in Texas (and no, not by choice, my company moved me here from South Florida and every day I keep trying to remember what exactly I was thinking when I said "yes")and front plates are required by law. I refuse to put one on my car and have had no trouble with the law for almost 3 years now (Benz C-class for 2 years, S2000 since May of this year). The story here is that if they stop you for speeding or some other moving violation they will also hit you for the missing plate to the tune of about $75.00, but apparently they very rarely stop you and ticket you just for the plates. Every day I see dozens of Porsches, BMWs, Benzes, etc without a front plate. I figure worst case even if I have to pay the fine every couple years it's worth it not to put the stupid thing on the best looking front-end in the car world (except of course for the Dionysus of the automotive world, the F360 Modena. If I ever saw front plates on one of those, and there are several in town, I'm pretty sure I would hurl right on the spot). Short answer: Gor for it, baby. Be a rebel. You can afford the ticket. Don't let The Man keep you down. Power to the People. Yeah!!!!! Oops, sorry, got a bit carried away.

I live in Delaware (The first state) and thank God a front plate is not required.

Even if you state requires a front plate (like mine -- Missouri) that doesn't mean you HAVE to put one on. The fine should be a non-moving violation so it won't affect insurance, and you might be able to get it waived the first time -- if you temporaraily put the plate on.

I question the legality of any state require a front plate -- I wish I knew more (or knew how to get more info) because I'd like to try and get the law changed. Besides, I see plenty of those smoked plate covers that totally obscure the rear plate -- now those SHOULD be illegal (and might be, but I see so many I wonder if they are).

I like gregstevens' excuse... that the front bracket is being shipped from japan since this is such a new car.

but i would hardly consider the s2000 a high end car, unicorn.
