Does having the top town really slow down the S2000? (results)

We went to test out a couple new parts that a fellow S2000 installed a few days ago (Mugen header and carbon fiber heat sheild thingie). So we went to our usual spot. We were doing runs from a second and first gear punch.

First, we ran with a passenger (who is another S2000 owner) in his car. I had my top up and he had his top down. I pulled him pretty good. I had a car length before I let off. We did this a couple more times and same result.

Then we dropped off the passenger and ran again. So it's just me with no passenger and same for him. He had his top down and mine was up. I pulled on him, but less then before obviously. Tried this a couple of times same results.

So we went to a coffee shop to talk about the results. I thought that the top down had something to do with it, since he usually would pull on me. We decided to run again, this time with both our tops up.

So we did it again. This time with our tops up and no passenger. We were pretty even. We ran like 3 times and same results.

We are kinda confused about the results b/c he used to pull on me before. Because everytime he gets a new item we go test it and he has lots of items on his car, so that's lots of testing.

BTW, finally I can chirp my tires with my new clutch and flywheel combo.

Only thing top can do is affect wind resistance. Definitely makes a difference in top speed (less drag with top up-probably even less than that with hardtop). Doubt it would make any difference at speeds you were running (1st and 2nd you said)

Does your friend with the Mugen header also have flywheel/clutch changes? Thanks.

Well, he has the Toda flywheel, MG racing carbon fiber cold air intake, Mugen header, Amuse ti single exhaust, Volk Racing CE28Ns, etc., but stock clutch combo.

Before, we used to run alot. He would pull me pretty good (everything equal).

I think what this shows you is that all he's done didn't make a big enough difference to show up in a street race.

No driver is going to drive his car exactly the same each race, so there's no great way to test this on the street. If one car isn't pulling consistently by more than a car-length, then I'd say they're pretty even.

My post might have been misleading. I meant 1st and 2nd gear punch to like 4th gear. So the speeds did get up there. Basically, we were running from a rolling start, so it can be more consistent then from a dead stop.

We did run before he got the Mugen header installed and he pulled me. After he got it installed, he (and another S2000 driver that drove his car before) said that the car did feel faster.
Then we tested it out and outcome wasn't what we expected. That's why we were confused.

Even if the header was good for 10 RWHP across the RPM range, that would make it a 5% increase...which I continually argue...cannot be felt.
