Wow, this story kind of freaked me out.

I mean, I have heard that they were going to use ERDs sometime in the future... I sure hope the S2K doesn't have one...

The article only mentions GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles, but does anyone know if the S has one?

How do you think they can tell if you over-rev your engine or not?

I've heard from an Acura tech that there are something like it in the HOndas.

Yes it does. A buddy of mine is a mechanic at the local Honda dealer. He showed me the neat little laptop (looks more like a tablet PC that is ruggedized) that they can plug into your car. It is quite impressive the data that thing can extract including speeds and rpm.

No data recorder is on board- Big brother is not watching too close. The PCM (engine computer) will store freeze data at the time a DTC (code) is set. All engine data RPM, sensor inputs/outputs are stored in freeze data. Honda has 2 testers to retrieve /troubleshoot DTC's. Both have the ability to snapshot engine data and play it back. But only when the tester is attached. When a code is stored if your freeze data doesn't match what the owner states you can have some problems- Such as Customer says: "I was only going 55 and the motor started making a funny noise" and the freeze data shows 8900 rpm at 145mph, Customer is a big fat liar.

I used a PGM-FI tester to snapshot engine data while my car was on the chassis dyno. It gives you lots of info, but only 25 seconds. The new HDS tester( a tablet PC) can store 3 minutes of data, but It's 5 thousand dollar price tag is a bit steep for most everyone to buy. The HDS is brand new and all the software is still in development.
