I have an '02, and mind not only grinds, but it occasionally falls out of 4th gear while I'm driving. It happens anywhere between 33 and 40mhp. I documented every time it happened. I took it in, they looked at it, ordered the parts and fixed it. I have a great dealership!

Answer, yes.
It would be nice if some Honda engineer could explain why they let this continue. They have to know exactly what causes it by now, but perhaps it's fundamental to the design and too expensive to rectify. Really this should appear in any review of the car - perfect smooth shifting, magical gearbox, snick snick... nope, grind grind. How many people would buy the car then? They might have even fixed the problem by now if the initial reviews were like this.

ps - yes, always pausing on the 1-2 shift is the best way to defeat the grind.

so far, i deal with it....i think my dealership is getting annoyed with me because im constantly in there, not necessarily for repair/service, but because some of my friends work there and stuff.....if it gets to a point where i can no longer deal with it, i will take it in and have them replace it....if they question me, i will simply go to another dealership!

My 02' is somewhere in between ones with no problems and ones with problems.
When it is cold, I have to shift very carefully into 2nd, which means pausing a bit. In the first few minutes your clutch has to exactly to the stopper or it might grind. This margin of error will increase as the tranny warms up. I finally know why I grind now. If everything is right and I go over a bump while in the middle of a shift into 2nd, my clutch foot comes up a tiny bit and that is enough for a grind in the first few minutes. I've only ground about 4 times like this and this is the only situation that I grind.
At normal operating temps, and high rpm 8500-9000rpm shifts into 2nd, no problem. I've never grounded when the tranny is fully warm.
Overally, the tough 2nd gear when cold is common. I have no idea why that is other than it is a triple cone synchro gear like first, which is also hard to get into when cold if you are rolling.
The rest of the other gears are double cone and there is no problems getting into them in the cold.
