Don't top off your gas tank - extreme example
Being an extrmely anal sort, I like to keep good records of gasoline mileage. So, when the automatic filler shut off engaged at 6.125 gallons, I figured: "What harm in putting in an additional .075 gallons to bring it up to 6.2 even?" After all, that is only 9.6 additional ounces of gasoline. Big mistake. Most of that 9.6 ounces ended up all over the left rear quarter panel, making one very gross mess. Ladies and gentlemen this is a most unusual automobile with a most unusual gas filler neck. I have learned my lesson - profit from my mistake.
Unusual it is. You can usually see down it a few inches to see the level of the fuel. I usually top it off once after the pump clicks off, never more than that. The fuel usually is an inch or two below the constricted opening the nozzle fits in.
I am also anal regarding keeping records of gas milage. I usually fill it up once a week, and every time it gets fuel at about 200 miles. I have an Excel spreadsheet going showing the car's progress.

Wow, I'm getting over 500 miles per tank each week and it only takes about 9 gallons. Oh, wait, you mean the S2000, I thought you ment my Insight. Yeah, I fill up with about 3 bars left as well. I will start the pump again after it stops until it clicks off again, then that's it. I do this with all the vehicles.
another one who keeps detailed records here...
and who has never gotten 200 miles out of a tank-
but i learned the topping off lesson my first fill.
i also have a "spill deflector" on the car (a rubber device that unrolls out of the gas fill area and keeps any overflow off of the car).
