Default Downshifting to pass...wrong gear!

Just a quick question! I was waiting to pass some old fogey and I was going about 68 (as best as I can remember) mph in 6th. I downshifted to pass and wasn't thinking and downshifted into 2nd! I heard the old rev limiter bounce a few times and was so startled it took me a couple seconds to realize what had happened. I immediately shifted into third and passed. Did I hurt my baby? I understand the rev limiter is there for a reason, so should I not worry? Let me know... I feel guilty!

I've hit the old limiter a few times. Everything seems to be fine and that was over 2500 miles ago.

It's my understanding that the rev limiter does not function on downshifts. It cuts the fuel supply when you're on the throttle and go past redline. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

The rev limiter shuts off fuel and or spark as you venture into the red zone. Auburn S2000 is correct, it is possible however to "over rev" the engine with a misplaced shift (downshifting to a gear that forces the engine past redline through its own inertia). As I recall, some here have done engine damage this way. However I would think that if you had damaged the engine you would have indications of this.

Not good, but I wouldn't worry about it. The rev limiter doesn't do crap if you mis a shift (except turn off the fuel). But at 68, a downshift like that would brake the car down to a safe zone pretty quickly.

Don't sweat it. It's a tough engine. Just be glad you didn't downshift from 88mph.

i think you were really lucky. that speed is right around top speed for 2nd, any faster and you could have over-revved the

i would agree with mgiang7

you are right at the max (or a little over) speed of 2nd.

i would imagine the little speed lost when you were going thought the gears, the speed lost when clutch encage with the engine (unless you were rev matching at red line), some other margine of error (speedo, etc) would put you right before the point of over reving the engine ...

just hope this is all true

drive safe out there~

68 mph is close to redline in second gear, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

What you really want to do is shift to 2nd at about 50 mph. The car takes off rather smartly at that speed. You definitely want 3rd gear from 65 on up to about 80 or so, then 4th gear.

Good way to blow your motor. The rev limiter is definitly for up shifts and does nothing for downshifts. You are very lucky you were not going 75 mph! What speeds are the top speeds in each gear. My Si is 1st-40, 2nd-60, 3rd-85, 4th-110, 5th-144
I'v seen 140, once and only once and never again.
